ranger transfer case/front driveshaft

ive got an 02 ranger edge 4x4 with auto 4wd. anyway in 4 hi and 4 low its making a hell of a clunking sound when gassing it and moving along at anyspeed. talked to the ford guy at the shop and he said where the front driveshaft joins with the transfercase there is like a cv joint connecting them and that its about to go out. he said it was 500 bucks just for a new shaft cuz you had to buy thewhole shaft cant just buy the part. idk if anyone else has had this problem i had my buddy go slow and i was crawling beside it and it is coming from this exact location. anyone know a cheaper fix to it? dont think theystarted this till 99 the cv connect thing.

You could always get one from a pull-a-part. It wouldn't cost anywhere near 500, I think I paid around 20 or 30 when I got one when I went to a manual tcase.

how hard was it to swap in a manual tcase?

Not hard at all. You just unbolt the old electric one and bolt up the manual one. Cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and your done. The hardest part for me was separating the old one from the tail shaft, it was stuck on there, I just used a pry bar to separate them. You will need to get a front driveshaft from a 94 or 95 expo.
