Ranger starting problem, Broke Again

My sons 1987 Ranger has left us stranded and again.
It is the 2.9 v-6 4x4.

It was a project and needed some work to get it on the road.

We have replaced the following:

Flywheel, All clutch components, solenoid, starter and starter cable.
Also the negative and positive battery cables have been replaced.

Symptoms are:
The starter grinds and does not always engage like it should.

What else is there?
We need some help.

did you put on a starter for a manual transmission

Yes, we put on one for a manual transmission. It's the second one in a month.
Not sure what to do from here.

Seems a common issue for the 2.9l once factory starter is replaced.
