What is the differences in a 92 explorer front end and a ranger front end? I know the width is wider on the explorer, but are the beams longer or is the length in the hubs or the knuckles? I bought a 98 mountaineer rear end with 3.73's, and had a 92 explorer ttb given to me with 3.73's. I just want to know if it will bolt up.

The front ends are the same.

No difference in widths at all. Same from end.

The rear axle of the explorer on the otherhand is wider than your stock ranger rear end.

are you talking about the 2003 ranger in your signature? the front axle is completely different in it than the '92 Explorer axle...

No, I have a 92 ranger trail truck. I dont see how the front ends are the same since the explorer rear is 3 inches wider, that would be a diferent track width front and rear. i guess i'll find out for sure tonight or tommorrow, it's definetly going under the truck. Then i have to fix one of those crappy trailmaster drop plates. I think im gonna use the factory bracket as a template and build a superlift style one. If I didnt have to fix the bracket anyway I would just replace the differental.

Rangers have always had different front & rear track widths (this assuming nothing has changed for '10 & '11 with the disc brake rearend).

The width #s have varied some over the years though (all #s are from WMS-WMS).

'83-'89 w/D28 axle:
58" front / 56.5" rear

'90-'92 w/D35 axle:
59.5" front / 56.5" rear

'93-'11:
59.5" front / 58.5" rear.

Explorers ('91-'01) are 59.5" on both ends.

Good info 4x4Junkie - I have a 93 Explorer Chassis for 4.0 and front/rear swap in my 89 XLT 4x4 and was wondering the exact same thing.

Thanks

This would be good for the tech library (hint hint)

I thought the Ex was wider but nothing I could find in the D28/D35 section about it.

So I'm guessing (haven't measured) the Explorer front frame rails are the same width as the Ranger? Or there are different TTB mounts to handle any width differences?

I know the rear Ex frame rails are wider than the Ranger but haven't checked the front yet. Have been wondering what I'll run into putting the Ex D35 in the 89 Ranger

none as long as you get the whole steering linkage from the explorer, the only issue you will have is front drive shaft as it'll need to be shortened an inch, or better yet grab a 1354 T case to replace your 1350 and the explorer front drive shaft, that's what I did and it's nice, plus not worn out like the front output of my 1350...

Pretty sure all the axle widths are there already.

Explorer front frame section is the same as a rangers.

TTB on either the Explorer or the Ranger from any year are from my understanding identical in WMS to WMS widths (unless of course you are comparing the D28 to the D35). However the Explorer 8.8 is wider than the early Ranger's rear 7.5 or 8.8 and still wider than 93-97 Ranger 28 spline 8.8's. So there was a front to rear width discrepancy on the early Ranger's axle widths. Not really a problem in my eyes, since most trucks come from the factory with a wider WMS measurement in the front than the rear. Correct me if I'm wrong somebody...:icon_confused:

Junkie's post sums it up perfectly:

"Rangers have always had different front & rear track widths (this assuming nothing has changed for '10 & '11 with the disc brake rearend).

I just thought it would be a nice to have, it would be a perfect addition to that chart comparing the differences between D28s and D35s.

It would be handy for people swapping in rear axles other than out of RBV's too.

My $.02 :dntknw:
