I've read till I'm blind. Oh crap! I can't see! :)
I have a 94 XLT with a 5 speed that has finally succumbed at 342K.
My question is are all of these trannys the same over the years, or do I need to stay in a certain year model range?

That question depends a lot on the engine you have. I am assuming it's the 4-cyl in your profile. If that's the case, yes, you need to stay before 2001, because when they went to the OHC engine the bell pattern changed. You can get a trans from the 2.3L or 2.5L Lima engines.

Thank you much! so 00 or below should fit.
Poor transmission has lived multiple lives, time to get her out of there!
When I let off the gas, she just groans until I get her out of gear.
You can hear it coming through the floor.
I just had to replace factory air last fall, replaced the engine at 251K, heck, my fuel pump went 188K. I must have gotten one made on Wednesday.
This truck gets me to the lake, and brings me home.
This truck, like my weapons will be forcibly taken! LOL! :)
What can I say? I swore I would never buy domestic again, and the old gal shut me up.

Actually I think it's '97 & below you need to stick with (specifically '88-'97). In '98 they switched the pickup for the speedometer to the rear ABS sensor on the axle, which means the transmission won't have the port in the tailhousing for your speedo drive gear.

If the tailhousing on your old trans is still in good shape, it is possible to swap it onto the later trans however (up thru '00).
