Question for the forum,

My 94 engaged 4 wheel drive low while stopped and in neutral. Upon disengagement(in neutral, foot on brake, automatic) when placing it into gear, gear gnash was encountered...neutral the only safe place after hearing the noise.

Another push of the button all OK. Park in driveway.

Well a small amount of snow accumulated in this area during this period of time, and several days later shovel back into ranger start, push 4 x 4 high, light comes on, shift to neutral, push 4 x 4 low, all 4 x 4 dash lights go out, never to be seen from again.

No 4 x 4 lights but stuck in 4 low. Have removed motor, it does appear to be bad. Mechanical turning of the triangular shaft only allows movement from 12:00 (4 low) to 3:00 (no drivetrain engagement in gear) Will not turn to 9:00 (2 high).

Any ideas what came unglued?

Sounds like it might be your shift motor controller (4x4 ECU), as the motor operates to a certain point, then stops...

Thank you , there is a noise heard from the drivetrain with the motor removed when trying to engage 4 x 4(motor does not operate while hanging from harness, grounded). However, the selection shaft will not turn by hand counterclockwise. Almost like an overshift on a manual tranmission.

Thank you

Problem solved,

Binding of transfer case relieved by lifting vehicle level and rotating driveshaft in neutral while rotating transfer case key, engine off.

Electric shift motor DOA and replaced.

Might help someone. (don't round off that selector shaft)

Good luck

Glad you got it fixed:icon_thumby:
