Has anyone here used a Quarterhorse to delete the PATS and rear O2 from an 99 Explorer ECU? I know it is possible but how much of a hassle is it? Opinions welcome.

I've never found any form of horse to be good at computer programming, so it's probably quite the hassle.

They're actually pretty good at it, but the hooves just don't work well with the keyboard.

That would be a perfectly good waste of a Moates Quarterhorse. There are other, more affordable Moates chips that can be used for the same goal.

I'm a little unclear as to how the quarter horse works to flash the ECM. Does it have to stay connected to keep the program in place? I asked about the quarter horse specifically because I would like to be able to use it to flash this PCM and then move it to another vehicle for more significant tuning.

You can use the QH to test tunes and then once you're happy with it, move that tune on to a Jaybird chip for a more permanent solution. The QH was never meant to be left in place indefinitely, though some people do it. Read up on them on the manufacturer's website. They spell it out pretty well.

One suggestion would be to leave the PATS and rear o2 sensors alone. :dunno:

I can kinda see deleting PATs due to incompatibility issues, but forscan can fix most of those unless you've got a HEC cluster. But I dunno why you would wanna delete the rear o2 sensors for any reason.

Well then stay off public roads and ignore the CEL? :dunno:

I can really feel the love in this forum.

I didn't intend to purchase cats for this truck, hence the turn off rear o2s. Since this is V8 swap I can't imagine trying to use the factory V6 cats. We don't have inspections in Indiana.

Leaving pats in place would mean rekeying the truck from my understanding and spending alot more time harvesting junkyard parts

I spoke to core tuning in Friday and I believe I have all my answers.

Thanks

Removing the convertors is against federal law, so you're not going to see a ton of written support for it (regardless of how people feel privately).

We'd need more information to know about the PATS issue and rekeying. Is this for your '88 truck?

What's the stock engine? If it's a V6, he already has PATS and you can put his current keys into the Explorer PCM/PATS module using Forscan.

This is the kind of info I was hoping for! Yes it is a 3.0 V6.

I googled Forscan and it looks like the PC version is free? So please correct me if I'm wrong but I can add the PATS module with my OBD link and Forscan?
