i was wondering if anyone could help me. i have an 85 ranger with the 2.8l v6 and manual transmission. i cant figure out why it want start. when i turn the ignition the motor turns over very slowly and want fire up. i know the motor will run because i can push start it by popping the clutch. i have replaced the cylenoid, wires, starter, and it does the same thing when i turn the key. im using a new battery and the flywheel looks fine all the way around. i dont know what else to do, any suggestions?

Will it start by jumping it off?
Check and make sure the ground wire to the motor is making good contact. Check the resistance between the engine and the neg terminal, should read very low ohms, the best would be zero.
Was the starter you put in it new or used? Get it checked, if it's new, you could have gotten a bad one and if it's used, it could've been bad to begin with.
Have the battery load tested, too.Even if it is new,it could be reading 12v, but not have the amps to do the job. Make sure it is fully charged.

thanks for the advice. i havn't checked my ground to the motor yet, that will be the next thing i do. it want start by jumping it off, the only way i can crank it is by popping the clutch in it. i have tried 3 different starters and they all do the same. i have also tried 2 different new batteries both with 800-900 cranking amps and i get the same thing. do you think it could poosibly be my flywheel cover? its not getting in the way of anything but it is in pretty bad shape.

Whenever you have slow cranking like that it is usually a juice flow problem...did you try jumping or even replacing the solenoid?

It is most likely a ground issue...does the light in the cab go really dim when you crank it?

As Mark_88 said, it's a current flow problem. Make sure batt. terminals are clean and tight and all wires are tight. You said you changed the solenoid, but as he said try jumping across it, it can't hurt anything and it will eliminate it as the problem. But the ground is most likely the thing to check.

thats great advice. i will try jumping across the sylenoid when i get off work today. if i recall right, i think the ground from the motor to the firewall is disconnected, so that could very well be my problem. i have checked and clean the battery terminals already. the cab light does go dim when trying to crank. i just got this truck about a week ago, and it had ALOT of problems when i got it. i think it will be a good truck once i get all the kinks out of it. thanks for the good advice! i will let yall know what i find out this afternoon when i try it. thanks again!
