Prison's over populated (not sure if this should be here or in the garage section)

Rockefeller law anyone?
Under the Rockefeller drug laws, the penalty for selling two ounces (approximately 56 grams) or more of heroin, morphine, "raw or prepared opium," cocaine, or cannabis, including marijuana (these latter two being included in the statute even though they are not "narcotics" from a chemical standpoint), or possessing four ounces (approximately 113 grams) or more of the same substances, was made the same as that for second-degree murder: a minimum of 15 years to life in prison, and a maximum of 25 years to life in prison.

whats wrong with that?

Yea, prisoners can sit on death row for a long time. But if you take them out back and shoot them after the trial you take away their right to appeal. Also, some states with people on death row don't actually execute people, which skews the statistics somewhat. Also, some states have had their death penalty laws ruled unconstitutional so they can't execute people that are currently on death row.

Prisoners don't get treated well in jail. Yes, some have AC, and other amenities that less fortunate people don't have outside of prison. However, everyone outside of prison has the right to make a choice. If I don't feel like being in my house, I leave. Don't like my roommate in the apartment, find a new one. The freedoms we all enjoy outside of prison are not fully appreciated until they are taken away.

Here is a thought! Every month WWF has a pay per view at a cost of around $40, let's pay per view executions where people get to vote on method of death. Kinda like American Idol for the prison system. After about the second gruesome death, these morons might try to live a productive life. Give the money to the education system.

sounds like that one movie with the governator, what the hell is it called? the running man

I'll never shed a tear for any criminal killed in the comission of a crime (and I also strongly support a citizen's rights to do so), I have never, and will never be a proponent of the government "killing someone back".

Death penalties are an atrocious practice. There are much more rehabilitative, and profitable ways to deal with those that break the law.

I want to know what happened to chain gangs. The prison system is designed to make those who diobeyed the law pay a fine (current system they lose their right to freedom). Why dont we make them work for and repay those who follow the law? Make them participate in activities similar to 4H or other charitable organizations. And look, we are teaching them life skills.

Now of course you cant have murderers out working. But those who are in jail for drug convictions, or those who were arrested on outstanding warrants for non haneous crimes. Hell, send them to Michigan and Ohio and make them do road repairs, 24 hours a day, 8 hour shifts. When they are not working, they either clean the grounds or serve other working prisoners for 4 hours, and then give them 12 hours to sleep, eat, work out, etc. I think it is a much better idea and I dont know why it would be hard start.

It is much too easy, and not that all uncommon for one to be imprisoned for a crime he/she did not commit. If the final punishment is death, then there is no correcting the "mistake," it is final. The state has then committed murder. I do not support the death penalty for this reason.

As far as I am concerned, life in prison without the possibility of parole is a much harsher sentence anyway.:)shady

They should at least be made to earn their living. Theres lots of roads that need fixing and thousands of acres of farmland that need digging. They'd also learn why paople work, no work no eat.

I know here in Tennessee we still have the "chain gang", it's not what it used to be, you actually have to earn your way into the workhouse as it is called... There you get more relaxed living conditions, and they do actually go out and work... Not real work, mind you, they walk along the side of the road and pick up trash, lol... I agree that prisoners aren't treated the BEST, but the rules they have are quite ridiculous for criminals... ALL prisons in the state of Tennessee have to have AC, and if for some reason the temperature gets above 80, they are levied huge fines by the government... If it gets 80 in my house and I complain, my parents tell me to shut up, that we're "saving money"... It's the people that would rather sit in jail at the taxpayers expense, than get off their butt and be a productive member of society that makes me angry... They have a choice and they choose to be in jail because it's "easier"...

I agree with you about the amenities that prisoners have. In my opinion prison should be a place so miserable that no one wants to go back there. Of course, that might increase the deaths of police officers and innocents as prisoners will do anything to avoid returning, but that's only a hypothetical.

Look at it this way. Yes, it pisses you off that people sit in jail because it is easier than making a living. However, if you really thought being in prison was a better alternative, you would be there right now. So although it may annoy the crap out of you that they are treated better than they should be, you clearly feel you're better off than they are and that's really all that matters in the end.
