Pretty sure this isn’t actually a 4x4 Ranger, Can you tell?

Hey everyone,

Later today I was planning on going and checking out this 2004 Ranger which claims to be a 4x4 but looks to be a fraud to me. Can anyone help confirm this suspicion? I looked at the brochure for the 2004 Rangers and I just don’t understand why it says “SPORT OFF ROAD 4x4” when that was never an option. See the pics and check them out. VIN is 1FTYR14U94PA42756 which I’ve put into decoders and it says 4x2 which seems to confirm my suspicion but I want to hear your thoughts please!

It could of had the bed replaced, it could be that the owner feels better about themselves If other people think their truck is 4x4 so they slapped stickers on it..

Why don't you message the seller and ask to see pictures of its front axles, diff, t-case, etc?

Thanks, I’ll be sure to do that! It’s a lot better than driving over an hour and then taking a look myself just to see they slapped some stickers on it! I also expect to see 4x4 on the back tailgate, would you also expect that?

For sure not factory stickers.

Cant tell by the pictures if its 2wd or 4wd.

Just ask for a pic of the dash and look for the knob.

Hard to believe that someone would claim 4x4 when a simple look underneath would expose the truth. But I've seen worse. I don't like the decal on the rear. looks to be an add on. If it was a dealer add then ok, but I don't recall seeing anything from the factory that resembled that.

That is not a Ford decal. irrc, Toyota had one like that back in the day. In any event, as the others have said, ask for a photo of the front axle and transfer case before you drive over there.

Thanks for the info! Feel free to close this thread. I decided to cancel with the seller because it’s just weirds me out that they would do that. Thanks for all the input from all of you! It’s a pretty rare combo I’m hoping for: 4x4 with a manual that has A/C Seems there aren’t actually many that fit that description!

That sticker will peel off... if the rest of the truck is what you want in the right price range I wouldn't let it derail the deal.

4x4's with manuals arnt *that* rare. Not as plentiful as autos by a long shot but they are out there.

Wasnt AC standard after 98 or so?

us back in the rust belt would readily do great bodily harm to get a rust free Ranger.
I can't tell by the pics either, but the wheels and lack of front tow hooks leans towards 2wd.

if the seller has no idea what it really is, then they probably also don't know what it's really worth. negotiation time !

Funny enough i didnt realize how many pretty clean 1st thru 3rd gen rangers are still out there untill i realized facebook marketplace dont require a facebook account.
