I've had this truck for about 4 years now and in the winter months the belt would squeal on cold starts but be fine after a while. I knew it was because the PS pump pulley was not in-line with the rest of the pulleys, however I never got around to fixing it because it was not that much of a problem until I replaced the belt. After I replaced the belt, it squealed even more (replaced with a gates belt) and I decided to fix the pulley problem. Then I ran into another problem and can't figure out how to get the pulley out because some dumbass decided to put either the wrong pulley or put it on backwards.

I've thought about adding some washers behind the mounting brackets where the bolts are to shim it to the correct location and was wondering what you guys thought of it. The other side of the pulley doesn't have a lip to grab either so it might be the wrong pulley too. I don't have any powersteering noise at all though.

It takes a special tool to press the pully on and off, maybe it just wasnt pressed all the way on. You may be able to borrow the tool from your local parts store? Someone here may know better I suppose it cold be on backwards. I don`t recommend shimming it back with the amount of tension required for the serp belt.

Looking closer the pully is on backwards you see the lip on the inside of the pully that is what the tool grabs to press it off you gonna play hell getting it off. If you use heat you will probably damage the oil seal for the shaft you probably best just getting a new pump with a pully the new pump comes without. If you use a wheel puller your probably gonna bend the pully also they are a tight fit. Maybe just get one from the bone yard for cheap then you have the pully if the pump is bad?

Yeah, the tool has two "jaws" that are supposed to grab that flange that is up against the pump body. Someone put it on backwards.

The way I see it you have two good options.

1) Take the pump off and press the pulley off with a press.

2) Cut it and get a new one.

The pulley is phenolic glass (like caliper pistons) or a hard plastic, depends on which brand you get. Either way, it should be strong enough to withstand a press if a proper set of jaws is used, but should be easy to cut with a hacksaw or cutting wheel.

Cutting wheel it is then. Thanks. Just need to be careful not to get too close to the shaft. I'll just break it with a chisel/hammer at that point.

When I did my Saginaw swap, I didn't have my puller handy. Thus came out the BFH, I was able to destroy the pulley, remove the pump and continue with my swap.

The new pulley was something like $6. Do not use my BFH method if your reusing the pump.

Hahaha, I'll get out my BFH and air chisel if things get that bad and will buy a new pump.

The BFH can also bring pain to the head.

I would disassemble the pump and take the shaft out of the pulley.

However, after rebuilds, those pumps always make a bit more noise... I have no idea why that is, either...

The secret is a metal ring on the inside of the pulley that fits the pulley puller!

Couldn't find the last piece, so who knows where it went. All of this was done while the pump was still in the truck.

Not bad compared to where it was before. Belt makes no noise at all now. Pump still perfectly fine, although I noticed there was a lot of play back and forth, but not side to side so I'm fine with that.

Edit: Here's a video for those that want to know how I got it off.
