possibly timing chain, not sure

other day while driving to town and back ran into problem, not real sure what happened.am working on a '73 "390c.i.d" motor, anyway coming home from town it started spitting and sputtering like maybe a plug wire got crossed[checked them out and they are in right order] so then i checked to see if any wires were crossed over one anothernope, that wasn't the problem either. so today i decided to dig deeper by starting truck to find out if it was an idle issue or only happened as throttle was increased, stepped on her pretty good got two REAL LOUD back fires assuming thru the carb,but not sure because i was in the cab. my conclussion is either i jumped timing by one or two teeth [if not more] or my timing chain went 'BYE-BYE' if my chain broke what do i have to look out for? have been told it might bend a valve but not sure.

73 should have points. Check your timing. replace the points and condensor, or at least pull the points and check to see if they are burnt. You maybe able to sand them a little and regap them. Sounds like a points issue.

thanx, got her done yesterday replaced timing chain and gears and dist. cap. btw i pitched my points in favor of a petronix electronic set-up
