Popular engine swaps for the Ranger

I think I owe YOU the apology- dip into the turbo forum here on TRS, or turboford.org, turborangerforums.com, etc. and do some reading. there's big power to be made with the little 2.3L, with some minor cost investment.

there is debate about the true engine weight of the 2.3 Lima versus the 5.0 Windsor- some sites list each engine as longblock some with accessories such as PS/AC compressor, alt, etc.

Down in the ford 2.3 section, they have the 2.3 pinto turbo engine weight listed as 450#, right below it the turbo coupe 2.3 engine at 380#. 5.0 Windsor at 450#, and the boss 302 same block and heads) as 500#.

Roughly 450 is the common weight I have heard thrown around for the 302, odd your website shows 411 for one with the alt, intake and maybe the carb (for an '89 Mustang GT :icon_rofl:) That one would have an aluminum intake and tube headers if it was stock, maybe compared to an older cast iron intake and manifolds (to get 450) or maybe it is bogus.

Boss 302 has Cleveland heads with intake ports that will swallow a tennis ball, I bet it would be heavier because the heads are thicker. And the block is all around better built too. (different metal content, 4 bolt mains, thicker deck...) Some mere mortal SBF blocks are cast thicker than others too.

All this talk of the 2.3 has me thinking of a possibly stupid question, is it possible to turbo the 4.0 without breaking it? Because if so, that would be worth doing after my rebuild...

If you behave on the boost you could probably put boost to the 4.0. Dunno what all is involved to keep it from going supernova in operation though, might have to do some searching.

Since they are obviously newer (and maybe more demand) in addition to being found in 5 years of late model Mustangs there may be more boost related accessories/info for the SOHC 4.0 if you would want to go that route. The 4.0 entry in our tech library shows several options for them.
