Pilot Bearing: Which way does it go?

Installing a new master/slave cylinder, clutch, new flywheel, rear transmission seal, new exhaust and got stuck on one small detail. Which way do I put the pilot bearing in? It has no markings, one side it more tappered then the other.

This is the only thing holding me up! Oh....do I have to pack the bearing as well?

I don't recall ever seeing a taper on the pilot bearings I've installed...



It's one of the simplest bearings there are on our vehicles. Just pack it lightly (but not too liberally) with some lube and stick it into the crankshaft until it's flush with the inside of the chamfer.

Push it in all the way and it'll be too much of a PITA to get out.
 
There is a seal on one side of the pilot bearing. Look in the inside diameter of the bearing and it should be a rubber o-ring type thing. This needs to face OUT....closest to the clutch. This will keep clutch dust from screwing up your needle bearings. Also...press it in flush ...no more, just like jughead said. It can be pressed in too far...i did it the first time and had to repull it.

The bearing should come pre-packed with grease...but double check.
