So this weekend ill be picking up my engine, transmission, and t case.

Its an 4.0 supposedly with 89k on the clock. Attached to a a4ld and an electric case. All from a explorer. Its been drained of oil then sat upside down so rain couldn't get in.

Current engine is past 300k so this will replace that. Replaced alot of sensors on this engine. They will all go to that engine.

What do you guys recommend I do to it? Idk that it needs a rebuild?

I'd be inclined to set it up to run while out of the truck. With the trans attached it can be turned over and started if you hook up the computer.
It's also a good time to change gaskets and check the engine over thoroughly. I had the 4.0 in my 91 out because of water freezing and popping out a frost plug. I found two frost plugs in the heads that had pinholes and so was able to change them out easily. If the motor had been in the truck it would have been much harder to access them as they face the firewall.
Clean the outside. If leaking replace the oil pan gasket. Add oil....very important to not forget. Do a compression test. Check the valve train while you are replacing the valve cover gasket. Remove and clean the iac. New sparkplugs.
If you decide to run the engine, get the rad attached and the wiring figured out. Run it up and do another compression test while the engine is warm. A leakdown test at this time can reveal bad valves, cracked heads or leaking head gaskets, bad rings etc. but so can other tests.
Hopefully some others can chime in as I'm out of ideas right now.
Good luck,

Richard

If it has been sitting a while I would replace the rear main seal while it is out, front main as well but that can be done with out too much trouble after install and a leak.

Valve guide seals can dry out and crack when not washed with oil, inspect them.
If they are starting to show cracks then you can replace them using compressed air in spark plug hole to hold valves in place, or use rope in spark plug hole to hold valves in place, while you remove valve springs and swap out the seals.

Well its an a4ld I have an m5. But got em all as one for 100$.

I planned to do take off the valve covers and the oil pan. Rear main is good idea. My current clutch components have less than 10k on them. Was thinking about reaching for the 200hp mark before I put it in.
