overtorqued some new drilled slotted rotors and warped them-can they be turned?

the rotors are the early d35 style,i overtorqued them with a breaker bar when i first got my truck 6 years ago and warped them.i heard that you shoulden't turn a fancy rotor on a regular brake lathe.what should i do? and should i have the wheel mounting surface checked also? they've been sitting around for too long should i just include them in the next scrap metal run?they were 70$ each so i woulden't mind spending 50$ or so to get them trued by a machine shop or somewhere if it takes that.
 
I'm doubting that a shop will even want to try to turn them anyway, the holes and such are going to catch on the cutter. You will be able to have them milled the same way a flywheel is done if you have a shop locally with the ability to do such a thing.

i can try and turn them at work but i suspected what you're saying and haven't yet.i considered only taking off a little at a time,but i should go to the local machine shop and ask about them.
 
Have em cnc'd down a few thousands of an inch. That would be your best bet.
 
try not using a breaker bar next time lol....Id talk to a shop and see what they say. Is it worth the time and money tho?
 
Dude never ever use anything like a breaker bar for this exact reason. Warping and cracking wheels and rotors. Always torque lugs to spec and there is a spec. I pretty sure rangers are about 100 ft lbs. Cheaper to torque properly than get more of those rotors.
 
i really cant see tightening a rotor too much warping it. its not like you are going to crush a rotor with a breaker bar. perhaps you warped them by overheating them maybe. but torqing them? i doubt it

i would have agreed with you before owning a ranger,i was pissed at the manufacturer until i found out i warped them before ever driving it. but now i use a torque stick or wrench on all the newer smaller rigs.i've had those rotors sitting around for 6 years or so,i might as well see if i can fix them before tossing them out.
 
Not only can over-tightening your lug nuts warp the rotor, I'd also make sure that the studs are not stretched. I have turned slotted/crossdrilled brake rotors with an "on the car" brake lathe before at the shop I work at. It worked out like any other rotor, didn't catch, drag, resonate or anything. The results on the bench lathe should be the same. Josh
