i dont know if its an electrical situation or what but my truck can only rev up to about 3 grand in any gear but when its in neutral it can hit the red line. It seems to have full power when i hit 3 grand. I just want to know what the problem could be. it has a 4.0 ohv 5 speed manual, dual straight pipe exhaust w/high flow cat, with 3.27 gear ratio with 31" tires. Could the gear ratio have something to do with it or the exhaust??? Any input would be great.

straight pipes? are they loud or quiet? that would tell you if you had a plugged exhaust.

check the air filter and housing for clogs.

then you'll have to check fuel pressure if you don't find anything

did u check for codes? hope its not ur computer bro...

no codes it, the exhaust is loud so no, like it feels to get good power but the rpms just dont seem right.

I have heard that in neutral many vehicles will only rev to three grand. Perhaps your computer thinks you are in neutral? Might it be the neutral/safety switch is screwed?
Big JIm

I know many newer automatic vehicles have rev limiters at 3-4k in neutral/park, I've never seen manual vehicles do this... Perhaps your truck has an automatic computer and the neutral switch is opposite of what it is on an automatic?

what i truly think it is is that my instrument cluster gauges are way off. My fuel gauge is messed up because it reads over full when i fill it up. But my speedo seems good. i have a bunch of gauges like diff. temp, oil pressure, air fuel ratio, and oil temp.

I know my 2008 ranger threw me for a loop.
At 3,000 rpm it would bog in park or nuetral.
then i found out about the rev limiter. It is an automatic trans.
I never had the limiter on my previous 5 speed standard shift rangers.:icon_confused:

How are you reving an engine in gear?

Or do you mean, in gear with clutch pedal in?
