I got out my NAPA filter book and looked up the stock Ranger filter (4.0 and 2.0/2.3/2.5 use the same filter as the 7.5, 5.4 and many other Ford motors)

The stock Ranger filter is a 1515 (Napa #) and it is 3.6" around and 5.35" long with 3/4-16 threads. The O ring is inboard and has a 2.834 ID.

I ended up finding a filter with the same thread, diameter, and O ring, but its 6.982" long. The NAPA # is 1773. (the Purolater was L400017) I also found a 1333 is a little bigger around (3.7") and 6.982" long, but it is valved different it was 30psi where as the 1773 and 1515 are 8-10 psi.

The stock filter holds around .625 t.750 of a qt. The 1773 holds 1.25-1.50 qts. So in the end you end up with 1/2 qt more capacity. This filter would work on the 2.0/2.3/2.5 but you would have to put a 90* adapter in because it would be too long to fit in there.

Here are a few pics. It is still tucked up high enough to be protected.

I believe in Ford terms that is the FL-820S (same one for the modular motors, most ford new v6's and some SOHC 4L, depending on application) and the FL-1-A used for the OHV 4L and I'm not sure what else.

how bored were you when you decided to look that up?

good info though :icon_thumby:

My rear main seeps a little(1/2 qt. every 3000), so I wanted to find a bigger filter to add a little oil capacity. I have a NAPA filter book that lists filters by dimensions so it only took a min.

I used a Carquest filter virtually identical to that one. I was in college and regrettably couldn't always get to my oil changes on time. So I figured I'd up the capacity (like diesels) and filtration to squeeze some more miles between changes.

It fit on my 2.3L... rather tight, but it fit there.

Took a little over 6qts in that little guy LOL

Used. Thanks!

I have a pic I'll post comparing the FL-820S (used on the 4L SOHC's) to the FL-1-A (used on the 4L OHV's) and the FL-299 large filter you are using.

I ordered in the FL-299 at work (it cam in with a WIX sticker on it) and I took a picture comparing the 3. I'll post it up in a bit.

so there is a larger filter for the sohc?

Well it depends, some early SOHC Explorers used the FL-1-A. It all depends on how much room there is.

I've had this filter before my 90° adapter, it DID fit. Never hit the rail. I've since put it on my 90° adapter.

Hopefully people can see this, other than me.

Good info. I got a remote filter kit from summit just need to put it on, they have a dual kit too.

To the person using this oversized filter to aid in slowing down the low oil level from a leak. I don't see that because all your extra oil will be sitting in the filter not the oil pan. So yes you will hold more oil but the level for the pick up will remain the same.

Your right. It was 2 years ago. I was younger and more ignorant.

I have since replaced said main seal and added an oil cooler. With the added line, sandwich plate, filter I am right at 6qt capacity.
