Hey guys, my alternator just took a dump on me about an hour ago, I managed to get it home thanks to a kind family whose driveway I coasted into. It was exactly 1 mile from home. Jumped the battery and raced home before it could die. I was a little surprised to find the sticker on the alternator was dated 1997. 149 thousand miles on an alternator is pretty dang good.

I took out the old alternator already and need to pick one up first thing in the morning. I've looked online and Autozone and Advance auto both have remanned ones in stock, for $100 after core, napa wants 140 to 600.. A couple years ago I had my first ranger's alt die after getting it wet and it was only 50 after core. Has price really gone up this much in 2 years or is it a location thing?

Anyone have any other ideas of where I can get one a little bit cheaper? Any parts stores you can think of? I dont need any performance alternator just a replacement remanned one.

I doubt picking up a wrecking yard alternator would be worth it, but would anyone recommend it?

As a parts store jockey I can tell you if you want cheaper go a junk yard. The 95amp unit has always cost over a Benjamin and I'd say always will. I put a 130amp on my 94 and even with my discount it was only 10 more than the 95amp stocker.

You may find a rebuilder cheaper but you won't get a warranty to speak of. You got yer money's worth out of the original. Go get a good one and spend the money.

I've meet ya, your pretty cool and never really gave ya a welcome to Ohio gift. So Tell ya what I have one here you can have. I took it off an old 2.3 parts truck that had a bad bottom end. So the alternator should be fine. I kept it for my truck but I no longer have it. I was just holding on to it for the hell of it. I belive I have a pic baried in my hard drive.

If you can figure out how to get it it's yours. let me know. I'm open for options till monday.

I figured I might as well shell out the bucks, better safe than sorry. Oh well. Im not sure how the heck I got my last one so cheap, but when I did the checker auto parts was going out of business and oreilleys moved on.

Ill see if I can borrow one of the Jetta tdi's Ranger McLaren. I hope I can. Diesel at 44 mpg should be cheaper.

hey matt if you want that alt. from Ranger Mclaren speak up quick, I am meeting him in Columbus saturday for the goodguys show, he could bring it with him there, and i could bring it up to you.

speak now or forever hold your peace!

Those alternators are pretty easy to rebuild. No special tools required. I think it cost me about 45 bucks to completly go though mine earlier this year. That is always an option if all else fails..

Hell I didn't even think of that. That'll work you he lives right by you.

If it doesn't work out maybe my nephew can get you a deal he works at advance on pearl in brunswick.

I got one sitting my shed that will work. Only problem is that I live in Oklahoma.

My orginal alternator kept working beyond the 100k mile mark. I decided to replace it before it could fail on me and got a reman'ed Motorcraft 120Amp alternator.

Thanks guys I decided to bite the bullet and get one from autozone for $100. Slapped it on this morning an charged the battery all on about 30 minutes.
