My 94 ranger 2.3L 2x4 check engine light came on , I pulled code 224 , primary coil pack, tested it and it failed. Replaced coil pack , plugs and wires. Check engine came back on same code 224, checked ICM it's good. Any ideas on what to check next. Truck idles , runs fine.

Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or longer to reset the computer then check it again.

There are several reasons this code should appear. A bad primary OR secondary coil, bad wireing to the coils from the ignition control module or the module itself. First disconnect the coil connectors inspect the ternimals. Clean and test the tightness of all pins. Then do the same with the ICM, focus on the lower connector that has the coil circuits. If the code returns AND the engine runs and idles without misfiring I would say its a bad ICM. How did you test the ICM? Some tests won't show intermittant faults.

SMTGREG I back probed the icm with my digital meter, don't remember the readings but they were within spec. What test should I do on it? I got an ICM for the junker put it in and the truck would not start (guess it was bad) We had 12 inches of snow yesterday so I won"t be going out for a couple days
Thanks Lou58:beer:

i'd check both coils again. a new coil dosen't mean a good coil. though i'd think it'd misfire if you had a bad primary coil pack. anyways check them again and have the ICM tested at your local parts store. they will check them for free. have them check it a few times to make sure they get it hot.

checked both coils

well I checked both coil packs first at the connector haynes states it should be less than 5.0 ohms I got 0.0 ohms on both packs. Second checked both packs for secondary resistance probed 1&4 2&3 and got 13.8 ohms from all . Didn't get to check ICM yet.

pull the 3 bolts out of the icm, flip it over and thoroughly clean all of the corrosion of off the back side of the icm and then hit the intake too. get some dielectric grease, coat both surfaces and reinstall.

Make sure your plug wires aren't arching. Open the hood at night when its dark and look for sparks. Make sure your plug wires are insulated where they contact the engine. Make sure the ICM is plenty tight on the block.

Well I finally got it figured out , turns out it was the ICM it was dead on the exhaust side if the engine. Put in a new ICM and the truck is fine no codes no CEL. Thanks to all for the help, until the next time
