not engaging in drive only reverse

hello my good friend has a 1996 b4000 v6 atx. the truck will drive in reverse but will not go into drive i am looking for ideas thanks for the input

First, i'd pull the dipstick and check the ATF level. Also, check the color of the fluid by wiping the dipstick on a clean paper towel, and smell the ATF to see if it smells burnt. It should NOT smell burnt, and should NOT be a dark brown/black color.
