Is there such thing as a normal amount of manual transmission noise? My '03 4cy 5 speed whines in every gear. It makes the same noise in all gears and only stops making noise when I take my foot off the gas. It's not terribly loud but it is noticeable. I'm hoping it's just a normal noise since it doesn't really ever change, however, the truck was never properly maintained before I got it and needed a ton of engine work before it was road worthy again. I don't know if the tranny fluid got checked or changed when all the engine work was done, but I assume my uncle would have mentioned it if he thought the transmission sounded funny. I don't know, I hope I'm just being paranoid!

If it whines in 4th gear, it's not likely the transmission making the noise.

I'd be looking at the rear axle instead.

It whines in fourth, is it a bad noise to have coming from your rear end? I hope nobody takes the last part of that sentence out of context.

There shouldn't be any significant noise coming from it.

I'd pull the cover off and take a look at the gears and the fluid. If the fluid is all silvery gray & nasty, you've found the problem.
