this is probably in the wrong location. if it is maybe someone could move it. im going to start prepping my cj8 for painting in the spring. i plan on doing it myself but i cant get a huge 230/240v compressor. the garage my jeep is in only has 120 feed and the main line to it wont support it. im not allowed to rewire it either. so i need to find a 120 compressor and a sprayer that can do a decent job with the limited amount of air flow 120 can put out. i dont mind spending 6-700 on a decent compressor but most of what im seeing dont really put out enough air to paint with. i know the sprayer dictates how big of a compressor i need but how good are any of those low volume sprayers. any reccomendations? ill be doing my ranger later in the summer.

really any gun now-a-days is a HVLP gun (high volume low pressure) and will spray at under 10psi. it really depends on your budget for a gun. paint guns can go form anywhere from around 20 bux to upwards of a grand.

IMO the primer gun should be your cheap throw-away 20 dollar gun wiht a big 1.6mm+ tip and a plastic cup. paint gun (depending on the type of color your painting, metalic, pearl, etc) should be in the 1.3mm tip area and should be a decent gun, IMO DeVilbiss is the best bang for your buck. for your clear gun you could use your same paint gun as long as it is extensively cleaned and swapped out for a little larger tip.

my personal guns are
primer- cheap harbor freight $20 1.8mm tip
paint- older Devilbiss $300-400 with a 1.3mm tip
clear- Anest iwata $600+ with 1.4mm tip

PS- if you really want it to look good get some knowledge on buffing for after you paint it.:icon_thumby:

but how much flow do they need at 10 psi. i may be getting a wheelbarrow style gas engine compressor and using an auxillary tank to hold more air. that may solve my problem since i should have more than enough air flow and dont need to burn down the garage doing it.

I can't help on the paint gun side but I've run a 60 gallon tank with two decent size compressors feeding it. I never ran out of air. So you could do what your planning and add an electric compressor if it doesn't pan out.

instead of spending so much on a new air compressor u could rattle can it. i did my 1983 dondge d50 with red spray paint. it took 12 cans and 12 cans of clear coat and then after 2 weeks i buffed it out and it looked like the day my grandparents drove it off the lot i sold it shortly after and the guy still has it and the paint looks just like it did after i got done and it has been 3 years, all u gotta remember it prep work prep work prep work, if u dont prep it good enough u could spend all the money in the worl and it would still look like crap.

Eastwood sells an HVLP gun that runs on 4cfm@29psi. They run about $160 and work pretty well. Not a production gun for sure, but a pretty slick home use tool.

Yea your not gonna be spraying at under 10 PSI....

This is an expensive gun, but you can use it for a little reference.
