Hi all,

I recently rescued a coil sprung 2000 2.5L ranger regular cab headed to the junk yard because it needed a clutch job.

Now the truck is running pretty good, I originally was thinking this is just going to errand truck, but it’s kinda spiraling in to a little tinker toy for me.

My last Ford was my first car, a 85 cougar with the 302(TBI), and that thing was horribly detuned from the factory.

I have mainly been messing with Subaru’s the last 2 decades, which many know are the most lego like cars with interchangeably. Which I see the ranger has quite a bit of interchangeably as well, and the pick-the-part junkyards are now fun for me again finding neat cheap upgrades for the ranger.

I’m pretty handy with the wrench and computer so, ultimately I think I’m going to 00/01 expo 5.0L swap the ranger, probably not til the Lima get tired or let’s go. However, I intend on completing a CA BAR legal swap, it’s always something I’ve wanted to pull off and the ranger seems “relatively easy”, famous last words right? Although, right now I’m just in the research and feasiablity planning phase. I have a little knowledge of what lies ahead from when I was looking to STi swap an 90s impreza coupe.

Too bad you live in Calfornia. The v8 explorers I have seen have the engine buried under emissions and other junk. All of which will have to be carried over to be legal in your state.

Congratulations. Welcome to the fun.

Good stuff... Lots of people ask about doing a 5.0 swap out there. I'm sure there is a way to get it done... but seems most don't. Would be good if you go this route... document the process. Others will find it useful I'm sure.

Welcome to TRS...

The key is getting the CA BAR sticker saying my truck is now “smog tested as” a 2001 explorer 5.0, once I have the sticker it’s open to any other CARB OE number items for the 2001 explorer. Also, I’ve learned a thing or two from the subaru days, and if what I have seen is true from the ford ECU programmers nothing is going to be an issue for me.

So.... I got a 2000 5.0 2WD donor for a price I could not pass up. The full 2000 donor is the key to CA legality.

I guess I’m commited to the ranger game now....lol
