New project 1992 Ranger Fireball

You should of taken the whole explorer engine and sold the grand marquis engine, you would of been ahead. Ptv clearance is gonna get you. Nice build though, keep it up. What ignition system you plan on using?

My choices were the Marquis 5.0 with 30k on a rebuild or the Mountaineer 5.0 with 245k, and the Marquis 5.0 was free. Since my goal is strong reliability versus max HP I'll cope with the limitations. Looking for a decent Mustang cam now to make it work with those GT40P heads.

Got an engine stand for $40 and I'm cleaning up the block. Not going to remove the old heads until I get confirmation that the new ones are okay. Swapped most of the sensors from the old intake to the new one. Its just sitting up there right now. For now my budget is stuck with the TFI ingnition.

What I'm saying is I'm not sure if your new heads are going to work with your current pistons because of the lack of valve clearance cut outs but also not sure if valves are longer or not.

What we're saying is, your pistons might contact the valves as the engine rotates with the GT40P heads. You need to check for piston to valve clearance when you install the heads. This becomes more crucial as bigger ratio rockers and bigger lift cams are used...

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I'm doing some more research--but my Googling tells me I'm going to have to learn how to use clay to measure the PtV and may be buying a new set of pistons. Better to find out now than on start-up.

If going to buy new pistons, then you should have started with the mountaineer, you would be money and time ahead.

Now a set of mustang e7 heads will clear with the 1.6 rockers, factory or pedestal roller ones.

I was considering gt40 heads awhile back since you can find explorers in the JY all day long but this same question arised for me with no answer since I'm running the same engine as you are starting with.

How about a 1987 HO engine complete for $250? Supposedly running 3 months ago before he pulled it. Would you jump on that? Hoping I can get a little $$ out of the Marquis 5.0 to help defray the cost.

That sounds like a pretty good deal, providing it has a good compression rating, which will tell you the life of the motor without pulling the heads...

Well, you know how it goes: if it sounds to good to be true...

The HO motor won't turn over freely. I put a breaker bar and socket on the crank balancer and it will turn about 180 each way before a dead stop. But, the good news is that I got it for $100. I'm hoping the heads are okay and there are many other parts on it that I needed for the swap, like fuel rail, injectors, valve covers, flywheel, etc. Anybody want some shorty headers or an intake cheap?

I would use the intake if possible and also look into why it doesn't rotate freely, could be something simple. If the pistons are still good then see if they are okay and put them into your current block and you are good to go as far as wanting to use gt40 heads.

Only thing different between the two is the forged pistons, ho cam and e7 heads that your good engine lacks. Swap those over and you have a mustang engine.

Pop the oil pan off and you will see why it aint rotating. As stated, swap the forged pistons, cam, and intake, you've got a potent motor good for about 225-250 hp, add the E cam you talked about and you should be around 275. Take the other motor with the parts installed and sell it...

Interesting turn of events today. I cleaned up the HO motor and took the heads off and found water in numbers 2 & 6. I had asked the owner if it was sitting outside with the upper intake off and he claimed the lower intake had tape over it (it was not visible in the CL photo). I think he let it sit out and then he tried to turn it and it was locked up--because he didn't even blink when I told him it wouldn't turn.

Anyway, there is no scoring of the cylinder walls and no pitting. I cleaned them up and oiled them real good and rotated it a few times and it all looks good.
I think there was just enough water that it hydro-locked the engine once one of those piston got to TDC. This engine looks cleaner than the Marquis 5.0 inside! I may end up with 2 good motors!

I say run the mustang engine, has everything you want on it.

The marque engine may be lower miles but that means it many not have been driven much and could have had long times between oil changes and fluids sitting in it getting old, which isn't good.

5 hours under a F150 in the JY paid off today. Got a M5OD-R2 trans, and a BW 1356 (manual) T/C, new clutch kit, and flywheel. Truck was wrecked, so I'm betting these are all good. Fulfills my desire to stay with a manual trans. I've got to get my 3" body lift and new body mounts ordered so I can keep moving on this.

Do remember that the bellhousing bolt holes will need to be drilled out a little to fit the 5.0 bolts.
