Im new but have been using the tech section for a while and Im need more info. Heres the run down.

I have a 94 ranger 4.0 manual. Im in the process of getting parts together to do a efi 302 swap and heres the first problem I ran into. I pulled a 99 explorer 5.0, computer and harness with the AOD before I read the tech post on the anti theft that can with this that says I need to use the explorer steering column to go with the anti theft.

So heres my questions...
1. Will the explorer column bolt in and the wiring hook right up to my truck? Or am Im going to have to pull more harness from the explorer to make the column work?
2. Has anyone figured out how to just bypass the anti theft?
3. Can I just pull another computer or a harness and computer out of one that didnt come with the anti theft and it still work on my engine?
4.I read that I should use a 96-97 explorer 5.0 cause it doesnt have the anti theft but coming across those are a little hardeR around here, though I did find one that still has the harness and computer in it. Will this harness and computer still work for the 99 5.0

ANY INFO is greatly appriciated!!! and when I start the swap since its my first in a ranger and Im learning as I go. What ever knowledge I get from this I will greatly pass forward. Thanks in advance

Welcome to TRS. You can use the 99 ecu if you get a tuner to delete the pats, which Is what I had to do on my sport Trac. Another issue you might have is with the fuel system. 99 is returnless. If you get a tune, this can be converted to return style. Here is your basic explorer setups:

96-97 no pats and return style fuel system
98 pats and return style fuel system
99-01 pats and returnless fuel system.

The 96-97 harnesses are slightly different between 99-01. 98 was a toss up, some had them. Take a look at both my build threads, both the first post. You will find more detailed info, and will also notice the differences in the two systems. The ex column will not bolt up, you will need the entire dash to swap, which will require firewall mods. The wiring is also completely different from the 94 dash wiring. If you had a 95, you would have the same style dash and similar dash harness. The non pats harness will fit the pats engine (96-01 engine and intakes, the 'hard parts', are all the same). Where are you located, I might able to help you if your close enough...

Tuner

Thanks SVT for the reply. What tuner did you use to take care of the PATS when you did yours? and how much was it? I think Ill just go though route since I already have the ecm. A buddy of mine has a wiring harness out of a fox body with ECM. I think I would just have to pick up a distributor. Would this be a easier way to go? or just do the tune? Im located in Colorado Springs,CO, but it appears your in Tennesse?

Thanks again for the help

pretty sure he uses a sct loaded from a tuning company.

the fox setup can be easier, but the eec5 tuning capacity and distributorless ignition and newer processor are the best way to go.

read svt's build thread, he really did a great job on the documentation.

Thats correct. I used SCT, X2 handheld. I bought mine used and went to a dealer for a custom tune. The next one I buy will be the X3 or the Livewire. If you buy one new, you get three custom tunes included with your purchase. I have done a V8 swap using the mustang setup, as well as the explorer setup. Like Bobby stated, the EEC5 system is better in every way, its more advanced, easier to tune, and easier to install. The vehicle I used the mustang setup on, is actually going to be converted to an explorer setup. This one I'm in the process of bolting an M90 supercharger to, so tuning will be easier with the EEC5 system....

Ok this tuning stuff is new to me. Since my truck doesn't have odbll how will I go about tuning it then. SVT how do I go about finding your build thread? If I can find it I probably want have to bug you guys as much lol.

There are links in my signature, just click on them. I installed a 97 explorer motor and harness/ECU into a 93 jeep wrangler. I redid the entire power harness using a ford distribution box (since the starter relay and ecu relay are wired into the box already) and ran power to the jeep through the ford box. I ran 5 wires (2 were power and ground) to the OBD2 port that I installed under the dash. It's not a difficult task and can be done in a relatively short time frame with simple skills, just remember to take it one wire at a time...

So I need to get a odb2 connector then? If I could find a good set of schematics I would be ok. I'll check you post and go from there.
