hey so i found a deal on a a dana 44 and 8.8 a couple weeks ago and raced down to get them. the guy said the front was out of a 78/79 f150. BUT it has no arms or coil buckets on it :S so my question is is there any way i can tell the difference between a 77 axle and a 78+ axle. they are at the farm right now so i cant check them till the new year. but i was gonna get my dad to check this weekend so i need to tell him what to look for..
im kind of scared now. ill get him to take a close up pic. sorry if this is a stupid question.

thanks :icon_cheers:

The main difference between 77 and earlier vs. the 78-79 is the later has cast wedges. The 77 & earlier has weld on wedges that can be removed and repositioned to correct caster. If doing a SAS with the 78-79 axle you'll have to jump straight to 7 degree C-bushings to be able to get enough caster so it will drive straight down the road.

if you get the casting number on the axle tube it will tell you all the specs on the axle from the dana site..

The factory tierods on a 78-79 go straight across from knuckle to knuckle. The 77 style forms a Y shape with the pass side tirod goin up to the pitman arm simmilar to the factory setup on a TTB ranger

thanks guys. my dads gonna look today. i remember the tierods being knuckle to knuckle... but i dont remember seeing cast wedges :S im hoping its all okay

so this is the photo my dad sent me. it looks like a 77 or earlier to me but can some one confirm this for me?

thanks
ps please ignore redneck lift brackets. they were on there when i bought the axle

Just get the bom numbers off the housing and look them up on Dana's website bud. That way you'll know for sure

yes, that is 77 and earlier doesn't have case wedges
