My credo
if it aint broke dont fix it if it is broke upgrade
my 2.9l just isnt putting out enough power :bawling:
i dont wana get read of the 2.9l i just wana be able get more power out of it

i'm telling you. b/c i've been there, and wasted money...

4.0 swap it, and be done.

i tried some options like headers, cam, injectors, filters.. and nothing helped a lot, it did, some-- but not a lot. i'd been cheaper off just doing the 4.0 swap in the beginning and calling it over.

best thing you can do to a 2.9, is make sure everything is good, tight, and all that stuff.. then gear the heck out of it

so 4.0 is the only way then how much work is it to swap the motors

the link you gave me Gray_04 did give me a lot of insight to the work im gona have to do to the ranger
i also have another question would a 4.0l bolt up to the 2.9l transmission an transfer case

that I'm not sure of hopefully someone else chimes in..

hopefuly an i apprecitate all in info youve givin me

The 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing pattern but the 2.9 A4LD tranny in your rig is way too weak for a 4.0, thankfully an M5OD or a 4.0 A4LD is a direct swap, depending if you want to go manual or stay auto..

my trucks a auto an i would love to have a manuel but the transmission i have is an after markert one its been rebuilt an has extra gears and a after market torque converter it was rebuilt to handle the pressure that the 2.9 cant put out i do not wana get read of this transmission is y i was wonderiing if it would swap to it an thank you for the tell me it would work

i ran the 2.9 auto behind my 4.0 for awhile. then i swapped it out b/c i had the 4.0 a4ld. i never killed my 2.9 a4ld. its still good acutally, its in a friends ranger behind a 4.0 swap. just don't get to stupid. the only thing i broke from my 2.9 set up is the cv style driveshaft (2 times actually)..

if you have a good trans-- swap to a 4.0 and drive on. then worry about it if you ever mess up the trans. but if you don't get TO stupid, youll be fine.

the 5.0 is nice, but seems to be more work. my 4.0 is sitting on my stock 2.9 motor mounts. its that easy to sit down. the wiring-- do some research. there are a lot of good write ups on here about it. its easier if you use 90-94 explorer dash- but i didn't. i wired it into my b2 dash.

and i can tell you-- if i ever find a b2 to build for a trail rig, the FIRST thing i'll do is a 4.0 swap. if i ever find a 2.9 anything and buy it, the FIRST thing i'm gonna do is the 4.0 swap. no questions about it.. i wasted to much money on my 2.9, and didn't get all my money back out of it when i sold it.

thank you for the info i well do that

i 2.9, is make sure everything is good, tight, and all that stuff.. then gear the heck out of it

That's all you need to know right there if you don't want to swap. That little 2.9 is basically making all of the power it can.
