need info on tk4 to tk5 replacement please

[84 ranger 2.3]

my tk4 in the my '84 2.3 making all kinds of noises and now the bellhousing broke at starter area. wanna put a tk5 in place of the tk4. how much (if any) mods are required to make this a reality. thanks

I'm not really well versed but i have owned both trannies..and have seen and sold the bell housings that are prone to cracking..

Have you found a TK5? That would be the first step i would think..and see what bell housing it came with if any. Usually a TK4 has an external bell I think..and a TK5 may come with the usual first gen internal slave that was common on most 85-87 Ranger/B2's. I have such a bell for a 2.3. Hard to find I have heard, but not as prone to cracking as the earlier external slave. (again, rumor) So if you find a trannie and bell..go for it..also keep your shifter from the TK4 as the later TK5 shifter's were made of plastic/fiber it seems and prone to failure in the shift ball area...they are still available but spendy...anyway hopefully you will find success in your repair...press on brave heart..

on edit..don't forget to locate the needed clutch master/slave line for the internal slave when u find the trannie...they are available but will cost some money (60+$) and you will need to convert your external slave to internal...
