hello i'm new to the forums here and this well be my first post so lets get to it..
i'm 27 still what most of you guys and gals would say young blood or wet behide the ears anyways i bought my mothers first new truck off of her that she bought back in 2001 a ford ranger XL V6 3.0L 5 speed that still had all the factory parts besides the normal fluid chanages it just rolled over 216k miles on it and it's been just over 4k miles from the last oil change. i'ev been looking around and can't find a good enough facts if about switching from the conventional oil or go synthetic or a blend any ideas...i also live in a city which i put that 4k miles on in just 3 months if not less also one more question what would be the best air filter to put on it it still has the factory filter thats been cleaned out about twice a year from when it was new on the lot but other then that the truck is fine and slowly getting cleaned up back to show room but is a long ways away

For oil filters I always recommend going with the OEM replacement when it is available, and since all the stores sell Motorcraft, it is available.

Air filter is the same deal. When the OEM one isn't available Fram and Purolator both make really good air filters, and either one should be fine.

wasn't asking about oil filters mainly the type of oil like conventional, synthetic or a blend and as for the air filter OEM one i don't mind mind but i'm also looking to upgrade the truck if it's worth it....and as for the fram filters i'm not going to touch anymore i get half a mind to go outside and drive a screwdriver though mine and replace it before changing the oil...use to trust the brand but not from what i've seen of there QC

Oil choice is very personal, but you can't go wrong using factory spec. Syn oil should be used with extended change intervals to make it somewhat economic.

One factor on buying syn oil would be how long you plan on keeping the truck. Any oil's performance should be measured using used oil analysis (UOA), about $25 per sample, otherwise you're just guessing.

well I've only got the truck 3 months ago and i'm only 4k miles in this oil run. I've been raised with to change your oil every 3-3.5k miles but that was before the syn oil came along where it's from what 6-13k? if I am not mistaken?

as for how long i plan on keeping the truck...well 10+ years

The time to change your oil is when it stops doing it's job. You can't know that without used oil analysis.

I run once per year oil changes at about 6K with Mobil1 0w-30. I could probably go a lot further, but once per year is my threshold. I have done several UOAs to prove I'm OK with that interval.

For an 01 3.0 the oil spec is synthetic blend 5-20, with a 5K mile oil change interval.

Wix and Mann filters are very good.
I would go with a synthetic oil. 10W/30, the older recommended viscosity.

My '04 3.0 has 272K on it. It has never seen anything except Motorcraft Syn Blend 5w20 and Motorcraft FL400S oil filters except for the factory fill. Wally world has the filters for $4. That's $0.50 more than the orange filters..... no brainer. It gets changed every 5K and still uses less than 1/2 quart even at 272,000 miles.
