Ive got a 94 2wd xlt that had a 4.0 5 speed. I swapped in a 74 stock 302 and I got an M5OD tranny out of a 90 F150. I put in a new flywheel, slave cylinder and throwout bearing. I also used the hydraulic clutch line for a 90 f150 becuase my stock one broke. Everything fits in nice but the problem im having is there doesnt seem like theres enough clutch pedal. I bled the line and everything and when the engine is running its hard to get it into 1rst, 2nd, and reverse and as soon as you start letting off the clutch pedal the clutch is engaging. Is it possible the master cylinder doesnt have the volume to push the clutch in all the way? Could there still be air in the line? Can I use the 4.0 clutch line? I havnt came across any info on swapping the m5od f150 tranny into a ranger. Any help will be appreciated. Bob.

Hey welcome first poster! Sounds like you need one of the bigger masters, don't know off hand what size either the master or slave you have but they really have to come close to match to get the proper stroke. Think TeddyZee used a later master that had a 7/8" bore.

Did any of the newer rangers have the bigger master cylinders? I have the master cylinder that goes with the F150 tranny but I will have to do some fabing to get it to work. The ranger cylinders are a different setup of their own. I was looking and I would have to put the f150 master cylinder on the side of the brake booster roughly where the throttle cable is and use I rod setup like the f series did to make it work. Is there an easier way to get it to work? It would be great if the rangers used a bigger master cylinder that would bolt up where mine is now? Bob.

It was actually earlier models with a larger master. Around 1989 is a good example, 7/8" bore. Later trucks (early '90s onward, like my '97) were 5/8" bore.

Another issue is likely bleeding the air out. These Ford setups are notorious for being a pain in the ...

If it's an external slave, try pulling it off and holding it in the engine bay. I filled my master, line, filled the unattached slave, then connected the line to the slave as I bled the master, forcing any air out as I made the connection. I did not touch the bleeder, as this only introduced air. A royal, royal, pain.

If yours is a hydraulic throwout bearing, I would recommend repeating the ridiculous bleeding procedure for Ford master/slave. (pump ten times, bleed, run a lap of the truck, swear once, sip water, repeat)

LMAO... so funny it hurts... and is so right! I tried for hrs to bleed to slave in my reg cab 97' and finally gave up. You could get it in gear if you put a little pressure on the stick and waited patiently, otherwise it was gear grinding central. 4-5 days later it finally quit playing games, and BLAM! a working clutch, just had to get the last little air bubble out via driving (or more pedal pumps then its worth to count).

Bob, what slave are you using? Looked at RockAuto and that F-150 had the large 7/8" bore and I see the built in resevoir on top. I think the ratio of MC bore to the slave is around .75 to .84 to get the right stroke at an external slave. There again, I'm basing that on the T-5 setup with the slave mounted behind the lever and pushing forward.

Just keep pumping the hell out of it with the cap off of the resevoir. The air will eventually work it's way up and out.

I'm using the factory ranger setup which I believe is 5/8". I bought all of the clutch hydraulic parts new. cylinder, line, slave cylinder, clutch setup and flywheel. I do have the f150 cylinder but mounting it in will take some work. Someone mentioned that the 89s had the larger bore cylinder can a guy use one of those as a direct bolt on or is it a totally different mounting setup? I remember when I first drove it when I got back the fluid went down and I had no clutch so I rebled it and since then no more air has worked itself out. Bob
