So I recently picked up a 97 ranger 2wd 4.0 5 speed from a friend and the only thing it needs is a set of rear shocks long enough to reach the bed cage in back without sacrificing travel. But I'm not sure what my max rear travel is. Anything will help guys. Appreciate it.

travel

Measure your mount points while truck is on the ground, then measure between the bump stop and the point of contact on the axle add an 1-2" for bump stop compression that will give how much down ward travel you will need. Doing the same be jacking up one side of the truck and measureing will only give you an idea of extension because in some deep ruts and stuff one side will compress down and will cause the axle to extend farther than can be measured with a drop measurement, so the best thing is shop by type of mounting they have and by the ground measurement ,then get the ones with the most travel better to much than not enough,

Thanks I really appreciate it. And I recently discovered a clutch problem. The reservoir was empty so I filled it and still nothing. I know the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing, is there any way to bleed it without removing the tranny?

I'm sure I've seen a bleeding procedure laying around in the tech section, but essentially there's a purge bolt below where the hydraulic line goes into the bellhousing on the drivers side right by the starter motor. You will need help to bleed it as someone needs to be depressing the clutch while you release the bolt, re-tighten, check fluid level, repeat...

If you're losing fluid there's not a lot you can do besides refilling until you are able tu pull the transmision and put in a replacement. Make sure to check the pilot bearing while you're at it.
