Need Help....weird engine problems

well i'm going to do an oil change on my truck today and when i got home from work this morning i did have a gas smell so i think my truck is getting over fueled?? any thoughts?!?!

Might be the FPR ( Fuel Pressure Regulator) is hinting of checking out.
Correct way is is get fuel pressure readings. A quick way is to pull the little vacuum line off, if fuel dribbles out...it's done....it still could be faulty.

but yes many thing still could be giving the gassy smell

I'm going to try to pull codes tomarro after i get out of work and and try the quick check of the FPR. I am planning on changing the plugs and wires as soon as i get some time off. pass side plugs look like they are going to be a pain!

Ok another opservation i had but never put it in my post yesterday i have black soot covering the end of my tail pipe letting my know that i'm deff not burning all the fuel but if i had a mis-fire wouldn't it be all the time and not in a specific rpm ( whick in my case is from 1500-2500), and i have no problems until the engine warms up. Also not sure if this is realted prob not but every now and again my temp gauge goes all thay way up to the top but i have no heat just blows cold air but the next time i drive my truck i have heat and the temp gauge reads normal.

If plug wires start to break down, they usually will start by missing only under a load at first, generally at low to mid rpms. I'm not saying that's the problem though, cause I've never had one do it bad enough to soot up the tailpipe. My 93 explorer was acting similar to what your describing but worse. It would, at random, puff black smoke, stink like the cat, and spit fuel out of the tailpipe along with a loss of power. It had codes that didn't make sense and finally wouldn't communicate with my scanner which ended up being the computer. I also have the same issue with the temp and heat in the exploder. I always assumed it was an air pocket in the cooling system cause I would just top off the coolant(it would always be a little low if that was happening) and it would be normal.

My first guess would be the timing advance. I'm not looking at thea engine..but you could be having a timing SPRINGS in the dist or even a timing VAC ADVANCE problem.
Big JIm

Timing is controlled by the computer so other than the spinning rotor there are no moving parts.

could also be up stream 02 sensor related, do you have a check engine light on?

Very possible, if the problem goes away completely under full throttle then this might be the issue

also could be an issue, pull codes and see what you get, if you get nothing or a rich code, this might be it.

ok so i changed the plugs and wires today havn't taken for a test drive yet. I did pull codes. on the koeo i got codes 14 and 24. so if anyone can let me know what the codes are telling my that would be great.

now i was talking to a tech and has was telling me that i deffently have a sensor issue. he was saying it would most likely be my temp sensor. what are your guys thoughts

Yes the temp sensor could be responsible...just amke sure you replace the one for the ECM...not the gauge

14 indicates the pick-coil under the distributor as erratic
24 indicates the intake air temp sensor IAT....look at this one closer

can anyone tell me where the ACT sensor is located. I would like to test it to see if thats whats causing my problems seeing that is one of my check engine light codes

OK so my truck has been sitting idle for awhile kinda got fed up with my engine problem but i changed the ACT sensor today and still has the same problem. when i pulled to old sensor out the tip was black and smelled like gas.

I would make sure that the all vacuum ports are open in the upper intake...& especially the smaller ports to the throttle body .

might be time to test the fuel pressure.

what code are being generated now?

changed the temp sensor the other day becaude some metioned that could cause my problem to still has the problem. checked all vacuum line ports and all are open. haven't checked fuel pressure because i don't have the tools for it.
