If anyone can help me that would be great. I have an 88 ranger and when the engine gets warm and in-between 1500-2500 and and sometimes up to 3k rpm it boggs down or hasatiates untill i give it 3/4 or more throttle to get it out of that specific rpm range.Its almost like its not getting enough fuel but i'm not sure. It will some times just come out of this funky hasatiation on it own for a little bit then go back into it?

About 6 months ago i lost the fuel pump in the gas tank so the truck has a new gas tank, fuel pump and fuel filter. I had the same problem befor i lost the fuel pump but when i replace everything I never had the problem until it started to get cold?

Not sure whats going on so if anyone can help that would be great. Thanks

My first guess would be the timing advance. I'm not looking at thea engine..but you could be having a timing SPRINGS in the dist or even a timing VAC ADVANCE problem.

I'm not sure how old the dist. is so maybe a new one might be in order??

check for codes 1st
could be lots of things...check air temp sensor,MAP, coolant temp sensor, O2 sensor TPS...etc

simple things can be done to help yourself;
check for vacuum leaks
clean & reconnect grounds

Yeah! What they said. I'm just too old.. been around so long it is hard to get a good feel for these newfangled computers.. In a carbed ride the dist would be where I'd look..

It is an efi engine, i have no check engine light on and i'n mot sure how to pull codes on these older trucks? how do you pull codes?

Check this out. Will tell you what to do and gives you the links to the 2 & 3 digit codes chart. Yours will be 2 digits.

The 88 is TFI ignition, so timing advance is electronically controlled by the computer. I had a similar problem a while back that would happen randomly at any RPM range. My truck would all the sudden cut out for a second, self test lights would come on (like when you Key On, Engine Off), then would come back and act like normal a second later. Turned out to be a malfunctioning TFI Module. It was basically shutting off my ignition (hence the self test lights). Popped a new one in and hasn't happened since. Take a look next time it happens, see if your lights come on. That definitely sounds like a similar problem.

Did you happen to pull codes? The computer can monitor when the coil fires from a fly back voltage that sent back from the primary side of the coil though an "ignition diagnostic monitor" or IDM. It expects a fly back voltage for each SPOUT signal. Seems common for PIP erratic (14) and TACH erratic (18) to be present with related TFI or wiring issues.

I did, but it was after I had already put a new TFI in it. The only code I got was 13 I think, couldn't control engine speed at idle or something like that (it's been a while). I had the battery disconnected a few times before I pulled codes, so if there were any they probably got erased.

well i'm going to do an oil change on my truck today and when i got home from work this morning i did have a gas smell so i think my truck is getting over fueled?? any thoughts?!?!

Is the "hesitation" a miss? If so, it could be as simple as plug wires breaking down. That also would give you a gas smell.
