Need Help....weird engine problems

If the ACT was black and smelled like fuel, then the FPR definitely sounds like a good candidate. Pull the vacuum line off the FPR and look for fuel.

Try this. (It's easy.)
Crawl under your truck. Disconnect the O2 sensor by pulling the connector apart.
Drive the truck to check if the problem persists.
If it does, simply reconnect, and keep looking.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if the problem disappears, as your symptoms sound exactly like one type of faulty O2 sensor behavior. If so, replace the sensor.
Good Luck.

I want to thank everyone for their help but right after my last post i got fed up with this truck and went out and bought an 02 ranger edge. Plus this ranger was going to need lots of body work to get it inspected again money and time, (mostly time) i didn't have.

i just had the same thing on my 87 ranger make sure to check vacum lines and if you have air conditioning dont bypass the litlle filter it important too it should be a red and green plastic line just take em out and replace with rubber lines
