So i have 85 ford ranger and the other day i stopped at a gas station, well when i went leave it didnt start. I replaced the starter ,starter soleniod and the alternator. Still didnt start. I Went and got a battery , and replaced all the grounds and postive wire running from the starter and the soleniod . after replacing all of that it finally started , i let it run for a little then i turned it off, well when i started it again it wouldnt shut back off even when i turned the key off and took it out. I had to pull the negative battery terminal. I trippled checked all of my wires and everything is good . if you even touch the negative to the battery the starter instantly starts turning over and wont stop. I have checked everything ahurded times and im out of options. Any help??

Can you take a pic of the wiring you did at the solenoid?

Heres the syliond

Most times this happened to me it was the relay (solenoid) on the fender. They can short internally so you won't see a problem...even if it is a new part...try putting the old one back on if you still have it...if that doesn't work then it could be the wiring on the starter itself.

I only have the one wire running from the starter and it goes straight to the solenoid, on my starter it only has one wire connection

The only thing I can think of is that the wire going to the small terminal isn't from the key switch, or the solenoid is fubar. Do you have a test light? Disconnect the cable that leads to the starter, there should be no other wires hooked to that terminal. Connect the test light to ground at one end and at the recently exposed terminal at the other. Get a friend to turn the key and you should see the tester light up. If it lights up without the key being turned then the solenoid is stuck closed. Replace it with a new one.

Threads merged. please don't start more than one thread about the same subject, it's confusing.
