Ok at this point I have no idea what I'm doing anymore. I got my pinion preload set by using the shims that came with the crush sleeve eliminator. Then I put my carrier in and check for backlash. Took it out, put it back in numerous times until I got .011" and then I check my pattern... It was right at the toe. And coast side seemed to be fine. The pinion was too close. So I took it all back out, took the 1 shim between the pinion and the bearing (the closest to the teeth) and put it all back in. Now I have like 2in-lbs of pinion preload...wtf??? And I didn't bother checking the pattern because I need the preload.

So, every time I take the pinion bearings off and change the shim I have to adjust the preload again?

I'm still having a lot of trouble. I make a little adjustment on the pinion shim then the pattern changes drastically.

As we said before, do not use the crush sleeve eliminator (or crush sleeve) until you have the gear pattern correct!

Ok that makes sense! That will save some time. I'm getting a caliper tomorrow so I can actually see the thickness of the shims I am installing. I should be able to set it up tomorrow! Thanks!!!!!!:icon_thumby:

.011" backlash is just about worn out. might as well replace the ring and pinion

Ford spec is between 0.008 and 0.015"... A lot of us have found the best pattern at 0.008".

So why does yukon say .011-.016"? I set it right at .014" and It still bothers me its that high. Do you think I should adjust it lower...like the Ford Specs?

Its already out so this will be easy. I don't want to tear it apart to do it all again.

Thanks!

Well I adjusted it to 0.09" and it feels much better... The pattern looks much better too because there is more contact on the flank. I'm still curious why Yukon lists the backlash so much higher?

Oh jeez. Thanks for the specs! I torqued everything to 60 like the Yukon book said. I'm going to re-torque them to the proper settings.

Stupid question...but is the goal to get the pattern even on both sides? Like my drive side is higher than my coast side. Its not much its just noticeable. According to the Yukon book (so who knows) it is an acceptable pattern.

Mostly you're looking to have the pattern centered top-to-bottom on the tooth, and having a more-or-less oval shape.

A pattern that runs completely off the heel or the toe isn't good either, but some variation between where the drive & coast sides are centered is normal.

Here are some patterns I took from mine when I set up the D35 & 8.8 for my BII:
