i just bought my 11th ranger first not to have 4x4 it is a 1987 ford ranger 2.9 v6 2 wheel drive i wanna turn it into a 4x4 from what i understand all is needed is a str8 axle and transfer case but im so sure there is much more involved anyone got tips let me know

It's very complex and has been covered ad nauseam. Searching the site will yield all the answers you seek. The easiest way however is to sell it and buy a 4x4. Probably cheaper too.

Yep, a lot more involved. Need a transfer case, 4wd transmission, new driveshafts and have to pretty much rebuild the entire front suspension. That's just a brief overview of the process, there's much more involved than that. It's very expensive as well.

What part of Florida you in?

2 to 4

the only thing i have ever seen a 2wd turned into a 4 is dedicated mud trucks mostly with rockwell axles down south but hey if yah got the dough to do it write it up and video it for the tech library

:dunno:

i would have to say this is all bullshit.

if you just need a 4x4 that will get it and handle ok then some ford arms and a panhard bar along with a 4x4 tranny/case gets ya to the goal. you also have a better truck then some turd d28 with a lift kit. even faster a yj front setup for around 300 bux that works good will really get ya going.

really, it depends on personal capacity and cost outs.

can you sell your truck tomorrow for more then it will cost to buy a 4x4? if you can --- then do it.

since all the factory componants on a gen 1 4x4 ranger save for the t case are trash and belong in a dumpster anyway your better off converting a 2wd to a 4x4. they are usually in better shape to begin with.

thanks for the info bobby im just gonna wing it and see where it takes me this truck cost me 400 dollars on a favor and it only has 90,000 miles for an 87 thats good i got it for a project and if it takes a little grime and grit then thats waht it will be
