I've decided to paint the ranger.

First step will be grind off all rust.
2. Fill and rough sand all previous rust areas and dents.
3. Sand all filled areas and the rest of the paint up to 220 grit.
4. Spray with high build sandable primer.
5. Sand primer coat up to 1000 grit
6. Spray with Army Vehicle flat Olive Drab paint. (cheap, durable as heck, and I like the color)

Now this is where I need help. I want a glossy finish, which the army jeep paint won't deliver by itself. So I need a gloss clear coat. The army jeep paint is a flat enamel. What product would you professionals recomend to use as a clear coat? I don't want to use anything too expensive if I don't have to.

First off be sure you use a basemaker with your OD paint. Otherwise you may have some problems or will have to wait a while before spraying the clear. I always used speedy basemaker by DuPont(I think. It's been nearly 12 years since I painted). IMRON is a good clear and it isn't too expensive.

Old army green was somewhat shiny, it was a darker green too. It may not be a totally correct color, but is probably about as close as you are going to get.

be careful with step 3) most sunken sanding scratches you can see in the finished paint are from leaving scratches in the filler and the fill primer shrinking in the grooves.get your bondo smooth before the primer goes on.don't rely on primer to fill dings and scratches it shrinks too much, even the best "low shrinkage" stuff.

believe it or not napa sells good paint(martin senor) and they have a brand crossfire that is cheap with a lifetime warrantee(if sprayed by an i-carr certified tech) for about 200$ a gallon.enough to paint a ranger twice.

one more thing-get a carbon canister mask and borrow a fresh air setup for spraying if you can.paint is deadly.especially some of the brands that use cyanide in the clear
