Hello TRS, I need to replace the clutch slave cyclinder on a M5OD transmission
On a 96 ranger XL 2.3OL and I am thinking of purchasing a transmission jack adapter. My main concern is, how wide is the transmission jack adapter or size
Should I pick? This is the first time I'll be working with transmission repair so getting an adapter is a first, yes I know I would have to get under the truck and measure the tranny, but on a busy work schedule I don't have time. I am just making plans for repair project in the fall when I go for a two week leave so for now I am preparing parts and tools for the repair. It's kind of embarrassing asking this kind of advise. Thank you Happy X Mas and a Happy New year.

I have a scissor style trans jack that I got at harbor freight that I really like. It's a bit funky on the M5OD 4x4 because the V-shaped bottom of the trans and the weight of the t-case drop make it want to roll, but it's not bad if I jam a block of wood in first.

depends on the type of floor jack you have.
if the cup lifts off its real easy.
that tranny is light, probably less than 75 lbs. I was 60 at that time and muscled it out with very little effort.
here is what I did for my 2005 with M50d a couple of years ago.

took cup off jack, placed a 2 foot piece of 2x6 on top of the jack, drilled a 1" hole in the center which is right over the cup mounting hole. Big bolt with washers on top and bottom, not too tight as it needs to swivel a bit.
went to hardware and got 2 shelf supports. L shaped and about 8".
raised board up to bottom of tranny, placed support on each side and screwed 'em down. add bungy cords if desired.
this tranny is tall & narrow, easily held in place wedged between a set of "goalposts"

helpful hint, get 4 long bolts the same size as the bell housing bolts, cut the heads off to make studs.
remove 4 bell housing bolts and replace with the studs. makes aligning the bell housing real easy for removal and installation.

I guess I should add mine is a 2wd, a 4wd with transfer case would need a bigger board.

To be honest with you I just use a normal floor jack and a chain to keep it from falling off. Everything else I just muscle it up. Worked great the last 3 times.

Tranny jacks can be a real pain when you have the transfer on there.

Hello everyone and Happy New year. Also thank you for your reply to my post. I love the advice suggested by everyone, but since I do not have time for the DIY tansmission jack
and where I am from rentals are not available. For the past three days I have been surfing
the Internet for transmission jacks and came across one from the home depot (see pics)
for $139. I have decided to order one, since it would be a lot easier for use. It wiil take about 3 weeks for home depot to receive the order since I am outside the US, but in time for the repair project. Thanks everyone.

That's a floor jack... You could have built that out of wood on top of a floor jack for a fraction of the cost.

And in less than 3 weeks.

Unless you live on Hispanola, or some similar island where the local ecology dictates that one rents wood rather than buy it.

Sure... Or that.
