sure wish i could be on the u.s.s. lake erie tonight.would like to see this one launched at that pesky satelite.i've seen dozens of launches from a spruance destroyer,but nothing this size.what do you all think,can they get it in one shot?

Their is a satellite that had a computer malfunction and went directly A-wall. Its been falling out of orbit without the ability of the comp. to keep it on track. The U.S. has a lot of secret hardware on board that they dont want falling into enemy hands, so what do we do, we blow the dang thing out of the sky. By doing so we make all the pieces small enough that they burn up in the atmosphere. Yea sure is gonna be pretty cool. They should be able to get it in one shot, yet again they are shooting a rocket at an object that is moving very rapid. Whatever, i too would like to be there.

the navy has been assigned to bring down one of our spy satelites,now that the shuttle is back on the ground.it's been on the news for a week.the deal is set for 10:30 eastern tonight.

I bet we can hit it. We recently had success in a joint missile defense exercise with the Japanese where we launched an ICBM (a dud obviously) at them and they were able to intercept it successfully. It was a huge step forward for the missile defense program.

It was really cool to hear about it from my uncle, who is in charge of the navy's missile interceptor program and was on board for this test.

i was aboard the uss hewitt when testing nato sea sparrow missiles in early 80s,and saw dozens of launches,never got tired of it.they are about as loud as a top fuel dragster leaving the starting line.

That satellite is probably moving at about 17,000 MPH. The type of missile they're shooting can probably travel about 5,000 MPH. Not much room (time-wise) for error at those speeds...

I suppose the only way to get it would be to shoot at it.... The miliary's missiles are incredibly accurate. So if they can't catch up to it... best just ram right into it.

I have been looking across the internet and havent found any info on the satelite itself. Does anyone know who made it? Lockheed or Boeing?

Nope. You were closer.

I get 16,000 MPH for a conventional 90 minute orbit (probably where this thing SHOULD have been had it not screwed up). It's certainly in a lower orbit, which is faster. But escape velocity is about 25,000 MPH, so it certainly isn't faster than that or it wouldn't be in earth orbit at all.

And this thing isn't very large. That's another fun bit for the targetiting folks.

FYI, no one buys that hydrazine cover story. Not even the Russians.
