Anyone have any idea on what the minimum amount of wiring needed to run the factory fuel injection on a 96 ranger? Building a 4cyl circle track truck and would like to run factory fuel injection if possible.

The injectors need 12volts. The ecu grounds them at the proper timing and duration to meter the fuel.

so.

12v to injectors
Individual wires from injectors to ecu
All the other ecu wiring
12volts to fuel pump
Fuel pump ground
Ignition stuff
Etc.

Thanks. Will this fuel injection work with most mild engine mods? Would like to find a hotter cam and maybe mill the head to gain some compression

Depends on the ecu you use and your ability to tune it.

If its a MAF sensor computer then it will self adjust to mild changes like cams or larger throttle bodies

A factory computer will need a few more things
ECT sensor(coolant temp)
IAT or ACT sensor(air temp)
Throttle sensor(gives instant throttle response)
(above share 1 wire but each needs 1 wire back to computer)

MAF sensor(4 wires)
Crank sensor(spark/injector timing)
Cam sensor(fine tunes spark and injector timing)
Speed sensor
O2 sensor(feed back for air/fuel mix)

IAC Valve for idle control(2 wires)

Then there are the PITA systems
EVAP
EGR
After Cat O2 sensor

Any of these not working can cause less power
There are tricks to give computer what it needs to see but that still takes wiring to achieve

I find most engines have very few "bonus" wires...

Like said, EGR and EVAP are really the only unnecessary things as far as making the engine run for racing.

I was told the engine is a 2000 2.5L with the 1996 2.3L intake and injectors. I did get it running. I had inadvertently disconnected one of the ground wires. Seems to run decent. Now in the process of eliminating all wires not needed to make it run.

Like said, that won't be too many... you can most likely get the EGR and evap gone and simplify the alternator wiring with a simpler alternator, maybe knock sensors, and there's likely stuff tied to the engine harness like power steering pressure and A/C compressor and whatnot...
