Ok here is my situation I have my explorer 5.0 installed all the wires run everything is almost ready to start. So I figured I would call the Ford dealer and ask about introducing my explorer ecu to my existing pats system. They both are pats type b so I figured it would be no big deal.

When I called I explained what was going on and he said it would cost about 200$ yes two hundred just to see weather or not they can do it and from there it could cost up to 500 dollars so I said I would get back to them friday to see if i have to go this route.

So my question to everyone is do I have to pay the dealership or is there a cheaper route.

I am to the point where I would just throw down the money but it is just obnoxiously expensive.

Is there issues mating the Mazda pats and the explorer pats? I figured since they are both made by Ford I wouldn't have a problem but the dealer seemed like it was a big deal.

If you have any suggestions please let me know I am supposed to have this done by next Wednesday because that's when I go back to school.
Thanks

You need an NGS+ or similar dealer tool to set up the PATS. It only takes a few minutes if you know what you're doing. The dealer is quoting you big bucks because they haven't done it before. Just a CYA move on their part but they just might end up charging you that much after you sign the estimate (because they can).

The NGS+ was very expensive new but it is obsolete now and can be sometimes be purchased used on eBay for about $400~800.

Thanks man that's what I figured I just didn't want to tow it up there and have them say since it is a Mazda that they were gonna have to replace a bunch of parts etc.

As far as the difference between the ranger and the Mazda is there none as far as pats systems go.

Thanks again

I don't have any specific Mazda info to refer to as evidence. To the best of my knowledge, a Mazda is just a Ranger with a few cosmetic tweaks and a few option differences. It came off the same assembly line and should have the PATS system identical to a Ranger of the same year with the same engine. That means Type B for any 99 V6 Ranger/Mazda which is also the same as any 98~2001 5.0 Explorer

you could use a computer from a Explorer that didnt use the PATS system unless you want the security of the pats. A friend of mine bought a 98 Mustang 4.6 with no keys and swapped the ignition out and a computer from a older car with no PATS and it runs just fine. Just a thought if you dont want to spend all that money with Ford right now.

To work correctly, the non-PATS Ex 5.0 modules (96~97) require changes or modification to several components: engine/trans harnesses, injectors, injector rails, regulator, fuel pump, fuel lines, CMP sensor/Synchronizer, MAF sensor, IAT sensor, etc. If using the Explorer's 4R70W automatic, there are more.

The only way around it would be to install the explorer steering column and related PATS components which the ECU is already programmed to, otherwise, a trip to someone with a scantool or programmer is what you will need

Moonpie,

I have a 1998 b3000 4x4, so I won't have to deal with PATS if I do a 96-97 Explorer swap, I think. How easy was this swap to the 5.0L? Is it essentially the same or even exactly the same as to the Ranger, as per the instructions at TRS?

Have you done the pin checks to verify all this?

If this sort of thing is possible with a couple dollars, do it. I would LOVE to have PATS.

Yes.

If you want to run the 96~97 PCM to eliminate PATS, it will connect to the later harness at the 104-pin but it will not work correctly as-is. The 96~97 have several sensor differences and have harness connectors and wiring to match.

The 96~98 Ex 5.0 is return fuel; the 99~01 Ex 5.0 is returnless and so is the 98+ Ranger/Mazda B. The two fuel system types run at different pressures, have different plumbing and are regulated differently so that would need to be addressed.

Could all of this be done? Absolutely but it is not as simple as bolting up the earlier PCM.

Yes my B3000 swap has been identical to the ranger swap. Mine has been almost a year since I got the motor however I rebuilt the whole motor and the actual swap part has not taken very long.

As far as the whole PATS goes I am probably going to get a Viper alarm anyway so I am not to concerned about the whole stealing thing. However I still have not found a way for it to be cheaper than going to the dealership so I think once I put my front suspension and wheels on tomorrow I am gonna tow it up to ford. Thanks for all the help guys.
