it came from an explorer, what can be the differences in this case?Well the US Rangers went to OBDII pretty early in 95, and the wiring didn't change any for 96, so it really should be a matter of installing the4.0 harness and having everything work, unless it cam out of an Explorer.

just to have it clear, when you talk about the harness, you mean the engine harness or the rest coming out from the 42 pin connector?The biggest differences is that one the Ranger the wires for the fuel pump and rear lights run out through the firewall connector and back along the frame, and on the Explorer they run under the carpet inside the cabin. It wouldn't be hard to move the existing wires on your 4-cylinder harness over to the 4.0 harness.
