Transmission is shot and I was thinking of doing the hd swap but when looking up used transmissions they list 3 or 4 different Id numbers. Is there a certain one I need or will any one of them work?

a m5od tranny is the same as a m5odr2. the r2 just has an extra bolt hole for the sohc motor. i actually have mine ass backwards.. i have a 95 m5od behind my 04 sohc motor and i have a m5odr2 behind my 99 oHV motor when i converted it to a standard. either tranny will work they both use the same slave starter, only differences is the shifter rails are a little different.

The R2 is an F150/Bronco trans with larger everything including engine bolt pattern. The R1 and R1HD are the RBV tranniesn
The HD has the extra hole. There is no advantage of having an HD on an OHV since the ratios are the same. The "shorter throw" shifter top plate was used on all 94+ M5OD trannies.

I read that 1st and 2 nd gear were better in the hd. Also can I put my tailshaft and transfer case on one out of a 2wd or does the trans have to come out of a 4x4?

I have actually pulled the gears out of an HD and a standard 4.0 trans. They have the SAME ratios. An M5OD from any other engine(3.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.9) will have lower gears in 1, 2, & 3 but they wont bolt up to a 4.0 ( except for the 2.9). That is why I put 3.0 internals in my 4.0 case.

In order to convert to 4x4 you will have to completely disassemble the trans and swap output shafts and tail housings. I have done this a few times since 2.3 and 3.0 trucks are most common in the 2wd flavor and I was building 4.0 4x4 hybrid trannies.

If you have never done it before I recommend getting a manual. Southwest Gear sells them on Ebay in paper copy or on CD. Its pretty straightforward once you figure out the counter shaft bearings have to come out in order to make room for the input to sneak out.

And FYI, I never had a trans failure until I swapped to the HD. I have since snapped off an output shaft and soon after grenaded reverse. The HD is no stronger than a standard trans. It just needed a name to differentiate it from the the standard OHV bolt pattern.

Ok junkyard said I have to have the Id # for the trans any idea what it is?

Found one from Man-Trans LLC completely rebuilt for $595 shipped

@ plumcrazy
Do you have any suggestions on what would be the best clutch to use?

I use Luk gold clutches. Never had an issue with one.

All you should need to know is what engine you are bolting it to, 2 or 4 wheel drive, and whether or not you have a speed sensor on the tail housing. Also on newer models you have watch out for t case shifter mounting points, some don't have provisions for the shifter.

There should be a sticker/tag with an ID number close to the fill plug.

Also some older trannies have a second neutral safety switch, but it doesn't change a thing if you plug it in or not. If your truck has one and the New trans doesn't then just loop the wires together.
