M5OD HELP w/ videos

I do see that now, so not the stock axle, already been swapped out at least once

He has a limited slip. His pictures have the trac-lock S spring and I can see the tabs of a clutch pack peeking out... it's a limited slip.

As for the reason this happened: My guess is that the cross pin bolt loosened up and fell out, which caused the cross pin to fall out, and the spider gears followed.. Lack of thread locker? Age? Who knows.

I still wouldn't write off that axle - I don't see any gear damage, but check the cross pin hole very closely, like I said if it's egged out, it's junk. If the cross pin hit the pinion gear and damaged it, it's junk. Either of those scenarios would lead me to suggest a junkyard axle.

I believe the pin did both. Also this happened during a blizzard. In my mind the shifter bushing exploded kicking the truck into reverse while it was traveling forward. Thats my guess. the shifter bushing was pulverized. Its jacked tho. the pin is mangled and i cant fully pull it out and i cant get that bolt un wedged. Think I found a perfect swap at the junkyard.

@RonD and @Shran

thanks for the help. Picked up an 87 off a 2008 today from the junkyard.

I did all the tests at the yard and it seemed great.

now I’m at home with the axles out and I don’t know how to check them.
For twist or bend. Just eyeball?

Are there seals I should re do? I’ve done the wheel hub seals but never a yoke.

anything to check under the cover.

I can still return if needed

thanks

You don't want to remove the pinion and yoke or you will have to redo the shims
If the axle bearings in the "new" one feel OK and seals are not leaking then leave it alone

You can pull the cover off and drain the oil and look for metal filings, then button it up and refill with oil

Any thoughts on seeing if the axle is twisted like you mentioned?

Old axles?
Yes, just eye ball or you can spin it in your hands, roll it between flat hands and see if there is a wobble

Pull the shafts, see if there are grooves where they ride on the outer bearings and check to see that the splines on the end are straight. If that looks good and the gears/bearings/etc look and feel OK, run it. Wouldn't bother putting seals in it if it's not leaking now.

Having trouble finding where the other end of this hose goes

If thats the vent hose it clips on the top frame rail or under side of bed, should have a small filter on it, so bugs don't build a nest, lol

Also,

My gut tells me that there is an alignment trick or something beyond just matching up the holes on mounting the diff to the frame.
