My truck is an 83 with a 4spd and manual transfer case. I recently found a 93 4.0 Explorer 5spd 4x4 at a pick n pull so I grabbed the transmission. The M5od is I think 4" longer if I remember right from the 4 speed, so should I have grabbed the driveshafts from the explorer? Does the manual transfer case shift linkage bolt up to the M5od, if not does anyone have pics of what they had to do to make it work?

there are bungs on the tail housing on the 4x4 M5OD for manual shift linkage. You may have to do some modifying to get the linkage arm geometry correct, I remember having issues with FM145/146 linkage not being the same as the M5OD linkage. Your TK trans, not sure if that will also be the case.

Personally I just send driveshafts off to the driveline shop to be cut/lengthened to my liking once I have everything mocked up since I rebuild joints when I am in there.

you still intending on a 2.3T in front of this? the 4.0 case won't bolt up to the 2.3 unless you follow the directions I gave you on TF.org

if you swapped in a d35, the front driveline at the yard would be fine. otherwise you need a different shaft anyway that will be custom or you can swap a longer yoke on. the d28 is smaller and about an inch shorter...

i usually just change to the 8+ in yoke (high travel) off of a fullsize when going to the longer transmission or the a4ld front shaft..

Mike, I picked up a 2.3 trans also and getting ready to swap guts. I'm not looking forward to stabbing that beast in the dirt and on my back.

I guess I was being optimistic and hoping I could just swap the driveshafts.

Could be worse, could be in the snow like here. Pull the transfer case off before you drop the trans, much more manageable than trying to balance it all.

Rather than start a new thread I'll post it here.

I pulled both transmissions apart last night and got the 2.3 one back together. It went smooth up till I put the top plate back on. I had some trouble getting the shift forks lined up on the sliders? (not sure if they are called that). Now it doesn't want to shift into any gear. It went back together really easy but the only thing I wasn't sure about was the most forward slider closest to the input shaft. It will slide forward but is tough sliding backward and doesn't click like the other slider does. I double checked it before putting it all back together but now I'm really not sure. Any ideas?

Well, I finally had a chance to work on it. I pulled the shifter off and lined up the three forks and stabbed the shifter back in. It goes in all the gears except 3rd even if I spin the input shaft. So, for shits and giggles I threw the 4.0 trans back together and it does the same thing. I'm not sure if it was my assembly technique or something else. I don't want to stab this trans twice.
