Thinking about putting the SOHC in my 93. It's got the 3.slow now. I can get a donor ex for dirt cheap, a OHV tranny and pan for cheap too. I know the bell housing are the same, minus a hole (could I drill it?) I will also be able to keep my manual BW1354.

M5ODs are easy to find around here. The HD version, unfortunately not. Also, I don't have the skills to make the tail housing mounts for the manual t-case.

Has it been done before with success?

I am not sure the bell housing for the 3.0 and the 4.0 are the same. I know the 4.0 OHV and the 4.0 SOHC bell housing bolt pattern are almost the same and transmissions can be used for either. The 3.0 is a completely different engine. I suspect the 3.0 and 4.0 bell housing bolt patterns are not compatible.

I don't think you have to have the HD version behind the 4.0 SOHC. You should be able to use any transmission that was used with a 4.0 OHV or SOHC.

Why not upgrade to a mustang transmission? The m5od shifts like a tractor. I would look into the tr3650, or tr6060 personally. [emoji41]

To the OP, I would not mess with drilling that hole. The 4.0 to 4.0 pattern is close enough without it, and unless you are really romping it you should have no issues. Your existing t-case will work just fine.

Yup, that post shows just about the level of knowledge and intelligence I would expect from the avatar.

The Mustang trans is not a viable "upgrade", as you put it, for his truck for a number of reasons. The shifter is extremely wrong for his application, he seems to have a 4x4 truck, and neither of the transmissions you listed have a 4x4 variant, and honestly, who gives a flying f**k if the M5OD shifts like a tractor, it's a truck tranny. If it was in a Caddy that might be a valid argument, but its a pickup truck, its not supposed to be a luxury ride.

Not sure where you are located...but I have an extra HD trans housing laying here in the shop.

Next issue I see would be the OSS on the HD tail housing. I assume the SOHC electronics/wiring require it, and no 4x4 OHV trans has the provisions to my knowledge.

As for drilling the hole in the OHV housing...no way. The SOHC bell has a relief in the casting for the bolt head/ wrench. The SOHC trans has the original hole for the OHV pattern as well.

Personally I would just swap in the OHV motor. The SOHC motors are less than impressive IMO...too many chains and guides and gears.

Thanks guys. After looking into it more, I've gone back to wanting the 5.0. The timing chain issues have me worried on the SOHC. The 4.0 OHV is a great engine btw. Love it in my Explorer. Maybe I will put the manual BW1354 in the Ex.
