My credo
drives a stick shift ranger
I bought what i thought was a hurst short shift kit assembly for my 04 ranger last week. I thought it was short a piece so i called holley and had them send the part. Turns out they sent me the wrong part, but its ok because after i really started looking, this is a core short shift kit assembly with a holley stick on it.

This.is the kit i got:

I got a heck of a deal because it was only 125 bucks and all it needs is a knob.

So i went out and put it on today. That was so easy to do that if u had parked near the garage, i probably would have been done in 30 minutes. I parked across the yard so i could be in the shade though so it douubled my time walking back and forth for tools.

When i pulled the factory shift stub from the transmission, there was a broken bushing that the factory stub sits in so lots of plastic junk went all over.

I got two hurst shift boot plates, too.

How's it feel? I have considered buying the core shifter one because I am tired of replacing the plastic bushings

Its awesome. Prior to this, i kind of thought i was looking at a clutch job in the near future because the truck was acting wierd and i had to put the pedal on the floor to change gears but i think it maybe been something with the broken bushing under the stock shifter, now.

I was talking to another ranger guy at work about this and he said his ranger makes a whirring kind of noise in second gear and if he moves the stick a certain way, it stops. Mine used to do that too, and i think it was the stock shifter vibrating against something, but with this new shifter, i no longer have that weird noise in second gear.

The other ranger guy at work said he is going to get one now also since he has seen it in person

I’ve been looking at the hurst short throw for when I do my trans swap.
Just got to make sure I can get the computer to work before I drop the cash.

Score +1 for Holley customer service!! I always wanted a Hurst setup for the FM145 ..(

Ok, i bought a generic shift knob to hold me over till a nicer pne shows up. Shifting holding the threads got old. The hurst stick uses a 3/8ths -16 thread and the generic shift knobs are all slip o

Some things i have noticed with some seat time.

Shift throw is so much closer and tighter than stock. Its so nice.

the shifter does make a little noise in third gear. Some people complain they cant handle the noise snd take the kits off. Mine is not bad, at all. First, second, fourth, and fofth as all quiet. Third makes a tiny noise, like metal vibrating against another metal object and its from the shifter stub against the third gear finger resonating through the hurst arm. Its not loud, or continuous so its not enough of a reason to go back to the stock shifter assembly. And the knob adding some weight to the end of the shift arm helps quiet the noise down even more. If you rest your hand on the knob, no noise at all.

And.... since normally 3rd gear isn't a continuously driven in gear, like 5th gear, or 4th gear, its not like you are going to deal eith the noise for extended periods of time

Funny, your dash has a controller for an airbag, my passengers say that I am the airbag... perhaps I should install a button for the passenger to control the airbag.

I wonder if putting some foam inside the boot would keep the noise down. Wouldn't bother me either way I think, I just accept that noise in a manual transmission is part of life.

Looks great. I want one. Or four................................

this is what i was going to try if hte noise was to bad. it doesn't bother me though

We just did a 45 minute drive to pick up some rims for the old tj wrangler and the ahifter was not bothersome. Cristina asked about the noise in third and i told her why it makes it now but she couldnt hear it before and she just said ok, and that was that

What is the part number for the inner boot shown in your first picture? Mine is totally destroyed and I am trying to buy one for replacement. I found what I thought was a p/n but it doesn’t work for finding one.

I have been looking for my reciept aince i saw your reply yesterday but i must have thrown it away. I just called holley's customer service number and the girl looked it up and put it in order for me.

I feel like its this one, though.
