I was looking looking in to doing a 302 swap sooner or later(when enough $$$ flows in), and I have been trying to research it the best I could, but I still need some questions answered. I know I have asked about a 6.2 Det. Diesel, and a Chevy 350 swap, but I have figured out thats another RBV(s) on down the road. The questions I have I hope are fairly simple, and I want you guys to know this 302 swap may not be right away, I just want to get most or all of the questions answered BEFORE I get anything for the swap. My truck is a 90' 2wd Long Bed, 2.3I4, 5-Speed M5OD-R1(99% sure it is), the truck is well worn and I will probably run the 2.3 for a little while until it breaks down again/ or I do the swap. Here are my questions, and ahead of time THANKS
#1. I want to use an M5OD-R2 if I can, if I did would I have to modify my driveshaft(lengthen/shorten) if I used the R2?And I hear the basic parts are pretty much the same between the R1 and R2 meaning can I put my current shifter on the R2?
#2. I would perfer EFI (Late 80's, Early 90's) if I can because I don't want to be paying out the @$$ for gas, I am hoping I can get around 20-23
highway mpg (US), Is that realistic mpg? And are mustang 5.0 wiring harnesses fairly simple(straight forward) to adapt to my current 2.3 harness?
#3. The suspension, I have several people tell me that I'll have to upgrade the suspension for a v8 swap, I am not so sure I'll have to though, but would I?
And the rear axle (7.5 in.) I won't have to upgrade it if I'm easy on the skinny pedal will I? Keep in mind this won't be really a street truck It'll sooner or later be lifted and have 31's or 33's (and differant gear ratio's to compensate for tires)
#4. The exhaust, what is the best way to go, mustang shorty headers, explorer headers, hedman(or whatever) ranger v8 swap headers? I do have a friend who can weld (MIG)if need be, and he's a dedicated FORD guy, and would love to help with a 302 swap.
#5. Motor mounts, I have seen pics of motor mounts in 302 swaps, I hear the simplest(and cheapest) way to go is to have v6 motor mounts, and have a flat piece of steel to adapt to the motor bolts, what IS the best way. Keep in mind need to keep this swap cheap but street legal.
Thanks ahead for any input, I just want to solve problems(most of them anyways) before they hit, I will put up a build thread when I do the swap, then I'll have fun in a V8 Ranger.
