Liftgate Handle Latch...Need Help

So the handle on my lift gate is to loose and doesn't stay in place. you can actually pull at it, then it falls off the latch to twist and doesn't open the rear lift gate.

i need help i just dont understand how it stay in place.
can someone show me some pictures of theres? and show me a blown up diagram.
my Haynes manual doesn't show anything.

There is a spring inside there that holds it in place. Not sure if there is a way to fix it other than replacing it with one from a scrap yard or ordering a new one from lmctruck.com. Good luck with it.

is it just the handle part or the whole thing.

If just the handle there should be a bolt on the inside that holds it all together and it might have came loose.

If is the whole thing then there is two nuts that hold it on and could have came loose.
But no matter what you do you still got to take off the plastic cover that is in the inside of the rig on the hatch.

When i bought my b2 i had two handles for the back and had to figure out how to put the handle back in place so it would even open the hatch but know i just got to figure how to get the window to open since the handle will only open the hatch and not the window part of the hatch.

plus ended up with a brand new set of tail light lenses.
I am just surprised the old ones even stay in place do to rust.

get a small 9mm end wrench or be prepared to work in close quarters but it won't take long to fix...

The handle with the letters on it is the BII handle. The other handle is off an Explorer. When mine broke I replaced it with the explorer handle.

Just drilled out the mount holes so the new handle would fit.

Found both at a local wrecking yard for a couple of bucks and about 10 min. work.

Old post I know, but facing a similar issue with my 88 Bronco 2. I pulled a handle assembly from an explorer but apparently too new of an explorer as my bronco 2 doesn't have any other holes in the handle assembly other than the large center hole. So now what?

You can open up the hatch, take the handle off, and shim it with a washer.

Mine is far beyond a simple washer repair. The internal piece that retains the spring broke into pieces.

I thought I read somewhere about being able to use an Explorer handle mechanism but apparently I was wrong because the Bronco 2 is missing 2 holes on either side of the center hole for that to work.

Err you mean fiberglass, the rear hatch isn't metal LOL.

I assume that using the backing plate just mark the holes and drill them out for those 2 side bolts, then the rest would go together the same as the original Bronco 2 latch release mechanism was?
